Judging the Frocks at the Emmy AwardsThere were some stunners (Julia Louis-Dreyfus!), bummers (Eva Longoria’s bow!), and a token crazy (Phoebe Price!).

Lost: Die Hard on an IslandWhoa! Seems like the ‘Lost’ writers’ room got awfully itchy during the strike, and when they got back all they wanted to do was blow some stuff up.

Changing in Public Bathrooms: Indie Film Stars, They’re Just Like Us!
The Independent Feature Project’s seventeenth annual Gotham Awards were at Steiner Studios last night, and Jada Yuan took a video crew all the way to the Brooklyn Navy Yards to chat up the indie elite on camera. Kyra Sedgwick was impressed by how fancy the event had become, while Jeffrey Wright extolled the virtues of Brooklyn. Maggie Gyllenhaal talked real estate, Emile Hirsch discussed survival techniques, and Juno star Ellen Page revealed a onetime Brooklyn job that will be familiar to many. Proenza Schouler Show More Fun Than Your GYN AppointmentProenza Schouler moved uptown to the magnificent Park Avenue Armory this year, and their fans came with them. We spotted the usual cadre of interchangeable blonde fashion editors, a sprinkling of socialites (including Aerin Lauder and avowed Proenza lover Jessica Joffe, who was wearing the same outfit she had on at the 11 a.m. Sari Gueron show scandale!), and, of course, Anna Wintour, this time with daughter Bee Shaffer in tow.

‘New Yorker’ Food Issue: Plenty to DigestThis week’s special food issue of The New Yorker would be worth reading without any specifically New York–oriented content. But fans of the locavore movement will probably want to flock to Adam Gopnik’s long piece on eating the fruits of the five boroughs (if you consider live poultry from the Bronx fruit, that is). Friend of Grub Street Gary Shteyngart has a moving little memoir about his boyhood love of McDonald’s that got us right in the kishkas. (Similar essays are by Anthony Lane, David Sedaris, and Nell Freudenberger.) But most enjoyable of all was Calvin Trillin’s essay about Singapore street food.

ranters and ravers
Critics Love to Love ‘The Closer’Kyra Sedgwick’s hit police drama returned to television this week for a third season, easily cajoling its way its way up to number one in its time slot. That’s no new achievement for the show, which has consistently drawn raves from audiences and reviewers alike
