When Lenny Kravitz’s penis broke free from her leather prison yesterday, we were all surprised. And also maybe aroused? But mostly just surprised. No one, however, was more surprised than Steven Tyler, who sent Kravitz a text message implying he was personally hurt that his old friend was keeping secrets in his pants.

What is it exactly? In 1998, photographer Mark Seliger captured Lenny Kravitz in the buff, in Nassau. I’ll let you Google the image on your own, but his hardware was featured prominently (as were his abs). It’s not the type of piercing that lances his penis, but a “pubic piercing”: a “hoop about the size of a quarter” nestled into his pubic hair.
Why did he do it? He revealed to Elle in 2011 that he got his “pubic piercing” because he wanted it. (Do you, Lenny.) Also, his mother left him a diamond and he thought, What better place to put the family jewels than by the family jewels? The maternal association is a little strange, especially since Kravitz told Contact Music that the piercing “hits the lady where she likes it and, because it swings, it can be effective in any position.” Let’s forget the diamond was from his mother because it seems to be a helpful relationship tool.
Does he still wear it? Is it visible in the #Penisgate photo? In the same 2004 Contact Music interview, Kravitz said that he’d never taken the piercing out. But things change, people change, tastes in genital accessories change, so I’m not sure.
