The Five-Point Weekend Escape Plan

Chow Down in Hudson

5. Oddball Day

Satisfy your yen for soft vintage tees at Sideshow Clothing Co.

After gorging on Hudson’s gourmet offerings, spend a more active day hunting among its treasure trove of vintage clothing. Grab a cup of coffee and a blueberry scone at Swallow, a roomy café that serves a rotating selection of brews from places like Joe. After all, the pace in Hudson is nice and slow. Duly fueled, get ready to hit the vintage boutiques of Warren Street. Hudson Vintage, right next door to Swallow, specializes in luxury designer items; you might luck out and find a gown that was actually worn by Princess Diana, or a Chanel handbag. At the top of Warren, Sideshow Clothing Co. is the best place for casualwear, like vintage Pendleton jackets, silk dressing gowns, and flannel shirts. Stop into nearby Grazin’ for lunch: The diner-style spot specializes in grass-fed burgers, like the Uncle Dude, with housemade chipotle mayo, Cheddar, local bacon, jalapeno relish, and an organic bun ($16.50). For rare vintage dresses, go a block off Warren Street to Five and Diamond Vintage; dedicated shoppers digging through the racks may find sequined gowns for under $100, or stunning 1940s lace numbers. Wind down with an artisanal ale (like Evans Kick-ass Brown) and a novel at the Spotty Dog Books & Ale, an independent bookshop with over 10,000 new books and a bustling bar. For dinner, hunker down at Swoon, where a James Beard–nominated chef cooks elevated homey dishes like skate escabeche ($13), butternut-squash risotto ($23), and brown-sugar-brined pork loin ($28) — a restorative meal after a day of trying on clothes.
