I had COVID earlier this year, and it was unpleasant, as expected, but one surprising new symptom I had was lingering eye pain. Turns out that’s not uncommon for COVID, and it was not fun. I was struggling to wear my contacts, getting really tired eyes halfway through the day, not managing to focus on my computer screen, and getting frequentheadaches. I Googled soothingeye masks, which took me to Cornea Care, which has very expensive self-heating warming eye masks. I didn’t want to spend so much on what I assumed was a temporary condition, so I decided to search for something more experimental on Amazon.

I found these, from a brand called BeHoomi. The mask heats up automatically once you take it out of the packet and place it on your eyes. They are incredible. So soothing, so comforting. I’ve documented my sleep issues here already. These masks make me fall asleep so quickly (sometimes even before I can spray mybeloved magnesium).

They’re single use, so probably not great for the environment, but definitely easy to travel with and use on airplanes and other places your eyes are more susceptible to fatigue, especially since you don’t need a microwave or anything else to heat them up. The mask unfolds with soft loops that go over the ears, and my husband and I have fairly different head sizes but have both found them comfortable, so that’s my unofficial statistical evidence that one size fits all.

It is to the point where I actually don’t let myself use one until I’m fully ready to commit to bed for the night. I tend to fall asleep with it on and take it off and toss it aside at some point in the night like I do with all eye masks. The site says it goes to around 105 degrees for 30 minutes, but I find it stays warm for closer to an hour (but I really do fall fast asleep, so I may be misjudging).

I’ve been gifting the masks to friends and keep one in my purse to pull out like a loving sleep fairy when anyone complains that they don’t sleep well or their eyes get tired from too much work (or scrolling) all day.
