The New Gap x Victoria Beckham Collaboration Is Very Good
Gap is back with a new collection with Victoria Beckham after the retailer’s first one this spring, and it’s filled with luxe knits in autumnal colors, CashSoft staples, trendy denim, and even a couple of occasion pieces. I stopped by the showroom for a preview and was impressed with the breadth of the collaboration. I got the chance to try on a bunch of things — here’s what I liked and what I’d skip.
The pieces I took home

Looking at the product description now, I see that this is a shirt, but I love wearing it as a cropped jacket. The Cambridge green, as Gap calls it, is rich and ideally suited for the fall. At the try-on, it was styled on the mannequin with matching corduroy pants and turtleneck sweater (see below) and looked fantastic. This is by far my favorite piece in the collection.

I was immediately drawn to this funnel-neck sweater as well, and so were the other editors who were there with me. It’s made with a soft, luxe merino wool and comes in five colors, which are all very good. I couldn’t decide between this pale yellow, green, and charcoal but ultimately chose the green to go with the corduroy shirt. The high neck and buttons take it to the next level. You’re going to be seeing this sweater everywhere.

I love the idea of pairing this tuxedo shirt with black cigarette pants. I couldn’t decide between an extra small and a small and should have gone with the bigger size for a looser fit, but the sleeves were a bit too long when I sized up.
What I would buy

This trompe-l’oeil pullover is made of Gap’s proprietary knit blend, CashSoft, and feels nice and thick. The inner quarter-zip detail is charming, as is the oversize V-neck. It’s sporty in that après-ski way, and wearing it with my hair tucked in made me feel like Mrs. Beckham herself.

A really great parka with a drawstring waist and high neck. The chocolate brown feels high fashion.

I like the clean lines and straight cut of this denim jacket, which is reminiscent of a work shirt or chore jacket.

These straight, rigid jeans have a nice silhouette, and the front seam plus dark wash reminds me of the Auralee Hard Twist jeans. They were extremely flattering, but the 31-inch inseam was too long. I liked them so much that I wouldn’t mind getting them hemmed — or wearing them with heels, as the product description recommends.

I’m wearing this T-shirt in the photo above. Nicely cropped and proportioned.
Everything else I tried

An unexpectedly preppy skirt in a collection that is otherwise quite jaunty. (Worn with the cropped corduroy shirt.)

I really liked the fit of these utility pants, but they were sadly too long on my five-foot-two-inch frame. They have two snaps on the hems for a tapered fit.

I love an overcoat, and this wool-blend take is a solid contender.

This feels like a partner to the high-neck pullover above, except it’s made from a wool-cashmere blend and not CashSoft, though their composition felt pretty similar. I did not love how this fit me, though, and much prefer the aforementioned sweater.

I am also wearing these jeans in the photo. The drawstrings are a nice touch, but the cut of these jeans was ultimately too long and wide on me.

I didn’t get a chance to try this peacoat on, but I am intrigued by its high neck, placket, and multiple pockets.
