I recently filmed anoff-the-cuff video for the Strategist’s Instagram, talking about my shopping white whale (it’s a pair of vinyl or PVC pants, think CBGB rather than Khy by Kylie). But here are some other shopping white whales I have: a worn-through raglan striped long-sleeve tee. A solid-gold name necklace for under $150. A bikini set that I can swim in (must also include high-waisted bottoms that do not look like a diaper). Oh, let’s continue, shall we? Silkpajamaswith a marabou trim. (Did you know Sleeper’s are viscose? I’m not paying that amount of money for a man-made fabric.) A giant cashmere shawl. Midnight-blue velvetmary janes. If I were being uncharitable, I would say that 90 percent of my white whales are not in service of the life I actually lead, whereI remain a laptop goblinby day and spend my weekends in the park or guzzling an extremely mid coffee in the local leisure-center café while my daughter has her swimming lesson. But I have always been inclined toward daydreaming, and I’m sure the days of marabou PJs are a-coming. In the meantime, there are worse things to do than create my Walter Mitty wardrobe and add dozens of items to my mentalsaved-for-laterlist.

I’ve just returned from a week in Sagres, Portugal, with my family. I worry that I am too potato Europe for tomato Europe. Despite my best intentions, I got sunburned (on my … lips?). It was also the kind of holiday where you are eaten alive bymosquitoes. My brother wore Deet like tweens wear Axe, but the only thing that brought relief was this clicker. I don’t know how it works — it basically just zaps the bite so you don’t feel the itch. We passed it around the villa morning and night, the way the cast ofStereophonicpassed around that giant bag of cocaine, frantically asking “Who’s got the clicker?”

In Sagres, I came across an extremely nice store calledRetro Sailor. It has little-to-no web presence, but it was full of new-to-me brands like RhythmandBrixton. My husband bought a pair of high-waisted pin-striped jeans. I got a sundress.

Also, sorry to be so dull, but I packed an empty Meliisnack boxfor this trip and it was the best thing I’ve done in years. I could load up my 3-year-old’s beach snack box with the odds and ends of the fridge before leaving our villa and then just refresh it throughout the day.

Thediaper bagI saw slung over every second Yoyo in Sagres was the squishy Olend Ona. That’s the third European city I’ve seen them in; my friend Hannah in Dublin bought one last year, and they’re a staple at the park near my house in London.
