I spent the past nine months planning my wedding, so naturally, I needed a new project. So far I’ve started scrapbooking and finally hauled my to-donate pile to Beacon’s Closet (all it took was thisHulken). I’ve also totally revamped my work-from-home desk space. I replaced my small, wobbly desk (options were limited when I bought it in April 2020 …) with astanding one from Flexispotthat’s almost double the size and agreen ergonomic chairandadjustable footrestfrom Branch. (I’m still in the midst of testing it all, so look out for notes in the coming months.) But most important of all, I’m catching up on my much neglected pile of TBRs, which have been gathering dust on my nightstand.

Usually, I like my horror and mystery onscreen, instead of on the page, but that all changed when I read my first Agatha Christie,And Then There Were None, over the summer. Then I read the sequel toBunny,by Mona Awad,We Love You, Bunny, and was completely obsessed. Now in honor of spooky season, I’m pivoting to horror.

For someone who likes to call herself a horror connoisseur (Criterion Collection’s 2000s horror collectionis my Super Bowl), I somehow haven’t read any Stephen King novels. After spending some time back home, I was killing time at the Minneapolis airport bookstore,Open Book(an elite airport bookstore that’s less Hudson News and more McNally Jackson), and decided it was time. A tip in theBook GossipSlack earlier this year led me to start with his first,Carrie—and I added his second,Salem’s Lot, to my basket, too, for good measure. (Mass-market paperbacks are still somehow extremely affordable.)

I devouredCarrieand a third ofSalem’s Lotthis past weekend (long weekend and nor’easter rain made for the perfect environment), and I’m hooked! I’m making it a long-term goal to continue to read the rest of his books in order. Here are some other books on my TBR:

My husband read this recently, and I was fascinated by all the maps!

Here’s everything else I’ve seen recently …

I finally gave in to the J.Crew roll-neck frenzy that took over our Strategist chat last month. I was unsure about sizing, so I listened toLauren Ro’s adviceand went to a store to try them on myself. I hated the sleeves and look of the women’s style (too frumpy) and although I preferred the classic roll of the men’s, even the smallest size made me look like a child playing dress-up. So I headed to the children’s section. The largest size they had in stock was a Large, which fit great length-wise but was a little too short in the arms. I took a chance and ordered the green in XL and was so pleased that it fit absolutely perfectly. (I’m 4-foot-11 and typically wear size XS for context.) I liked it so much I have the other two colors, ivory and navy, on the way. Seriously the perfect all-season sweater!

The aforementioned sweater.

I resisted the initial impulse to splurge when the Molly Goddard Baggu collectiondropped last monthand rewarded myself by getting the bag I spent all September thinking about. The snaps have a surprising heft to them that feels special and expensive. So worth it. Can’t believe it’s still in stock!

Did you know that there are years and years of archived radio showsjust sitting here? I’m a recent WFMU convert; my husband introduced me toTom Scharpling’s “The Best Show”early on in our relationship and we have Clay Pigeon’s morning show as our alarm clock every morning. After I discovered an old co-worker has been DJ-ing heresince the early 2000s, I’ve been digging around, letting the archives transport me to a different time (while discovering some great music along the way).

I played violin off an on throughout my childhood and — briefly — in college. Although it’s been over ten years, I can surprisingly still remember some songs from memory and read sheet music so I’m starting to play around again. I’m thinking about taking some lessons to make up for lost time. One of my friends needs a violinist for her battle-of-the-cover-bands band she participates in every year at the Gutter (next year is the Chicks), so I have more than enough time to get up to speed both figuratively and literally (have you heard that fiddle?!). I’m probably going to need this so I don’t annoy my neighbors.

Last year I fell deep into the Hobonichi-unboxing-video rabbit hole thatfinally convinced me to ditch my old planner for something much smaller. This year, in hopes to start journaling and junk journaling (which is really just scrapbooking, let’s be honest) more, I bought an A5 cousin as well. I also couldn’t resist how beautiful the Tolight cover is and how nicely it complements the green Weeks.

After going to nine concerts in September (six of which were all in the same week) I realized my ears aren’t as resistant as they were in my 20s, so I think it’s time I protect them.

I saw an ad for this a few months ago and I haven’t stopped thinking about how this might be the solution to all our cat-scratch problems. It’s the least I can do for our poor couch …

I’ve been resistant to part with my old, faithful Forerunner 645 I’ve had since 2019. It has a rose-gold face and is beautiful. But after the GPS failed at the Chicago Marathon last year, I figured it’s time. I just started testing this one and it’s like a whole new world of running data!
