The newest Baggu collaboration is with British fashion designer Molly Goddard, known for her use of ruffles, gingham, and punchy colors. All are present in the 16-piece collection, which includes frilly and snap-embellished crescent and shoulder bags as well as several new prints: hot-pink gingham and three different fairy-tale-inspired prints centered around a winged pony named Twinky. Like Goddard’s clothes, the collection is fun and playful and at times even glamorous — the Ruffle Baggu in solid black would make an excellent going-out bag. And considering that Goddard’s pieces usually go for Dover Street Market prices, I wouldn’t expect any of it to last very long.
Baggu sent fellow Strategist senior writer Lauren Ro and me some of the bags from the collection to test ahead of the official launch on Tuesday, September 9, at 1 p.m. EST. Here’s what we thought and what we’d buy, either for ourselves or as gifts.

This solid black ruffle bag wasn’t in our preview haul; Baggu sent theTwinky Scene printinstead. (It is very cute but not exactly my style.) But of all the bags in the collection this is the one I would (will) buy for myself. It’s so sophisticated and understated, while also being a bit silly. I think it would look fantastic worn with an all-black outfit going out to dinner with friends. And the ruffles would be fun to fidget with while waiting for a subway or for a sandwich at the deli.

When I asked our resident fashion expert, Strategist writer Ambar Pardilla, what she would pick from the collection, she also chose the Ruffle Baggu but in the hot-pink gingham. “Honestly, I would love to put my groceries in there,” she said, specifying that by groceries she means snacks from Trader Joe’s. (“A pack of frozen shrimp gyoza and a small mango smoothie,” if you’re curious.)

My second-favorite bag from the collection is this baby-pink ruffle shoulder bag. It’s so sweet and would look great with a simple T-shirt and jeans. I’m also very into the fact that it matches mypink scrunchie sandals from Camper. Both make a typically childish color feel mature.

Ro says she prefers the ruffle-less standard Baggu bag for herself. They are probably the most practical of the collection and the easiest way to incorporate a fun print, since so many of us already own a bold Baggu tote for schlepping a variety of stuff around. You actually get four bags in this set, as the bag the bags come in makes a useful makeup or charger pouch.

I prefer this bag in black because it’ll go with everything and you won’t get tired of it. It feels similar to the Sandy Liang Baggu collaboration with its dangling bow ties. I also love the surprise baby-blue print fabric lining.

My first impression of this shoulder bag is that it’s bigger than I expected it to be. I wouldn’t buy it for myself, especially in the hot pink because I don’t think it’s my color and because it feels a bit too young and flashy for me. That said, the bag is very nice and can fit a lot of stuff, including a small laptop. Both Ro and I think this and the Mini Crescent Bag below with the ruffled handle would make good gifts for teens or college students.

If ruffles aren’t your thing, the collection has several bags that incorporate Goddard’s love of snaps. Ro and I like this one for its small size and cargo pockets. It has the same blue liner fabric as the above ruffle bag, and the snaps on the strap make it adjustable.
