I’ve had an on-and-off relationship with Banana Republic for years. But this year, we’re back together (for real), and I can’t remember the last time it was this good. It finally feels like the same brand that had Nora Ephron and Hunter S. Thompson write product reviews for itsmail-order catalogue. There are now very appealingcotton-silk crewnecksandquilted chenille field jacketsas well asflannel drawstring pantsthat feel like a nod to the original Banana Republic of the ’80s.It might have something to do withZac Posen, who was appointed creative director of Gap Inc. (which includes Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy) in 2024. This past January, our editor Lauren Levy coined the termGapaissance, and just last week, our senior writer Michael Zhao asked, “Has the Gapaissance spread to its sister brands?” Maybe! All I know is I’ve placed more orders at Banana Republic this year than any other year I can remember. And if you’re wondering what to get at Banana Republic, well, I did the shopping for you. Come for the alpaca-blend polos; stay for leaf-print Sherpa vests.
