There’s a Lot of Nice Stuff at Banana Republic Right Now
I’ve had an on-and-off relationship with Banana Republic for years. But this year, we’re back together (for real), and I can’t remember the last time it was this good. It finally feels like the same brand that had Nora Ephron and Hunter S. Thompson write product reviews for its mail-order catalogue. There are now very appealing cotton-silk crewnecks and quilted chenille field jackets as well as flannel drawstring pants that feel like a nod to the original Banana Republic of the ’80s.It might have something to do with Zac Posen, who was appointed creative director of Gap Inc. (which includes Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy) in 2024. This past January, our editor Lauren Levy coined the term Gapaissance, and just last week, our senior writer Michael Zhao asked, “Has the Gapaissance spread to its sister brands?” Maybe!
