When Allison Williams posted anInstagram Reelearlier this week about the fanny pack she wears around the house, we had to find out more. So we reached out to her to ask about the bum bags she swears by, plus everything she carries in them.
My sister-in-law once planted this seed in my head. When she does a move, she always wears afanny packso she can keep her phone, her tape measure, and all the things you’re constantly looking for when you’re moving around boxes at hand. And then at some point before a trip, I realized that I was constantly doing the same thing. When youtravel with a kid, you’ve got thekid backpackand you’ve got yourown backpack, but there are really only six things you’re constantly trying to find and they just get covered up with endless stuff. So as an experiment, I was like,Why don’t I try wearing my fanny pack on this trip and see if it works?And I was a changed woman thereafter. It’s just too convenient. In the morning, I literally put on my clothes, I put on my fanny pack, period. What’s incredible is that I can just go. I have my credit card and my license in there. If I suddenly have to run to town, there’s no gathering of anything. I just walk out the door.
Our generation grew up thinking that fanny packs were the least stylish thing imaginable. Once, I stood up in the frame of a Zoom with a couple of my friends growing up and revealed my fanny pack, and there was a gasp in the group. They were just like,I can’t do it.I can’t make the leap from where it was cemented in my childhood to thinking it’s cool now. I’ve been proselytizing to them now for months. I’m sure they’ll get there. I’ll wear them down.
I rotate between aDagne Doverand anAway fanny pack. The original one that I fell in love with was a collapsible Paravel, but Paravel doesn’t exist anymore. I’m still in mourning. That fanny pack was my gateway fanny pack, and I just loved it. I don’t really have one that I feel quite comfortable pairing with a dinner outfit, so to speak. I was at a wedding this weekend and I left her in the room. I felt bad, but I was like,It’s a clutch night. I’ll be home later. I haven’t quite figured out what level to get to for fanciness.

What’s in it
There are always Listerine strips, which is a necessary thing to have. There’s always hand sanitizer, always multiple lip products, like a basic moisturizer and then something with a little bit of color. TheLaneige Vanilla Glowy Balmis my favorite. And then in terms of color, there’s aNYX lip pencil that I love in the Los Angeles coloror this tinted Dermophil that I buy whenever we’re in France, which is basically a tinted ChapStick. And because it’s allergy season, there’s a tiny Systane eye drop in there. Hand lotion. Usually something that smells vanilla. The one I currently have is theKuumba Made vanilla-bean roll-on. It’s such a tiny way to control your environment to be like,I can smell a smell I love at any second. I found it on Amazon. I love it, it’s so classic, it’s very Marnie, it’s very me. I love vanilla. It writes itself as a joke.

And then myPattie Yankee Agape cuticle oil, which I have completely forgotten is not a normal thing for people to do in conversation or at a dinner table. I will constantly just be suddenly putting oil on my cuticles, as I’m doing right now because I just invoked it, so I had to use it. She has two different applicators. One is aroller ball, which I use before bed, and there’s also a pen one, a clicky pen that reminds me of theStila lip gloss. It’s a nostalgia clicking motion for me, in addition to being very compact and easy. Being able to look down at your hands and be like,They do not betray how exhausted I am, feels nice. When it’s that time of the month, there’s tampons, pads. And then EarPods, wired. The leather holder on the EarPods was a stocking stuffer one year from my mom. It’s fromShinola, and it’s a magnetic cord wrangler.

My journal and my pen, obviously. I was looking for the smallest possible Moleskine I could find and then a specific leather cover for said tiny Moleskine. I was looking for something where I could put the clip of a pen into it and found it onEtsy. I then began to search for tiny pens. This is amini Pilot G2. I’m very, very, very pleased. It’s just really nice to be able to jot things down. For a while, my search history thought I was probably moving into a tiny home and needed everything to be small.
And then always, myhair scissors, except when I’m traveling. I feel naked without them. I’m sure I should be a little bit more discerning about my hair scissors. I can’t even read the brand on this one anymore because I’ve had them for so long. This is something I did a lot in my 20s, and then, as it should, motherhood made it impossible. But I then started again. The parts of my hair that were blonde are starting to grow, so there are more and more split ends. And I just realized at some point that I don’t want to cut my hair. I like the way it looks right now. I’m obsessed with this combination of carefully colored hair with no style and haircut to speak of. I don’t do anything to my hair when I get out of the shower. I don’t have time to style it, so at least if the ends looks healthy, then we’re good. It’s definitely the kind of thing where if I’m lost in thought, if I’m on a phone call, if I’m thinking through something I’m trying to solve, trimming my split ends is a very satisfying thing to do that takes zero active brain thought. I saw a bunch of the comments on my Instagram that were like, “This is such a good ADHD hack.” I am new to the clan, so maybe this is a coping mechanism that I didn’t even identify that way. But for the combo of anxiety and ADHD, it does seem to do the trick.
