Since my own kid and my friends’ kids all seem to have way too much stuff, I am all about the fewer-but-better,expensive-but-worth-itapproach when it comes to toys. But LEGO and its younger cousin, Duplo, will always make the cut; the classicbuilding toysare beloved by kids (and adults) of all ages, and though they are certainly not cheap, they have nearly endless play value to show for it. I don’t know much aboutStar Wars, but I do know a good deal when I see one. LEGO’s Imperial Star Destroyer ship comes with a hidden foldout carry handle, two spring-loaded shooters, a lift-off top panel, and seven minifigures including Darth Vader, Commander Praji, an Imperial Gunner, and a Stormtrooper.

Because of the number of pieces involved and the complexity of the designs, LEGO Icons sets are rated for ages 18 and up. But if assembled with an adult nearby, they can be excellent long-term projects for tweens and younger teens. This fancy hotel from the turn of the 20th century features a domed roof and a tiled lobby floor.
