One of the toughest things about facial aging is that it’s a very personal and visible transition that happens during a period of many other transitions. Most of us start to really see some lines or laxity around age 40. But that’s also a moment when you’re dealing with other big life changes — career shifts, aging parents, perimenopause. (Remember the disorienting blur, roughly 20 years ago, of graduating, detaching from your parents, finding a job, and standing on your own — all at once?) I think of taking good care of my skin as a way to exert a wee bit of control, when many things in my life are ultimately outside my influence. Wrinkles Week is about the Strategist beauty team sharing what we’ve learned about products, tools, and treatments, so that you can take some control over your skin, too.

To do that, we’re delivering five days of stories where we’re obsessively researching key skin-care questions: What, exactly, should you look for in an anti-aging moisturizer, and need it be expensive? And speaking of expensive, we’re finding out if there’s a worth-it difference between a standard $300 LED red-light mask and its $1,000 counterparts. We’ve also heard that a lot of you are extremely into Jones Road and curious about what face yoga even is, so we’re digging into those, too.

And while we’re mostly focused on the xennial, born-before-1985 crowd, this week is really for anyone looking to smooth out a line or two (or delay their arrival). Pretty much everyone should be using retinoids, right? Well, we’re figuring out how to optimize your retinoid formula. And everyone can learn a couple things from the group of sun-protection crazies we found who layer up on UPF leggings, gaiters, and hats while also popping on silicone SPF eye patches.

My goal for this week is for you to walk away feeling ready to pick your skin-care path — whether that’s a full-tilt, more-is-more approach or keeping it cute with a nice, simple moisturizer. I’m happy as long as you know your options.
