Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.)

And while we’ve written about lots of things for your dog — including the best dog beds, the best dog leashes, and the best gifts for dog lovers — here, we’ve rounded up the best outdoor doghouses as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.

Best-rated (and least expensive) outdoor doghouse

Petmate Barnhome III Dog House
$75

Nearly 80 percent of reviewers give this doghouse five stars, and more than 15 percent say it’s perfect for their small pet, since it does have a 15-pound limit. “I have a Boston terrier, around 8 pounds,” one reviewer writes. “She can walk inside just fine, without bending over. It still has enough room for her to grow into it.” Another says their “15-pound dog fits nicely in this house.” But no matter what size animal you have in there, this doghouse does its job of keeping them dry and warm, says one reviewer: “I have only had these houses for a few weeks and both have seen pouring down rain and 0% water got inside, none.” They add, “I put duct tape over the rear vent and put slats of vinyl/plastic over the door to keep some wind and cold out.” Others have made their pets even more comfortable by lining the inside with blankets and body heaters. One reviewer, who bought this for a “Chihuahua who unfortunately has to stay outside in a pen because she is very mean,” says, “I put a piece of carpet in the bottom and also bought the body heater to put in it along with her blanket.” And while this is technically a dog house, more than 60 percent of reviewers say they bought this for their cat, thanks to the small size. One who bought this for their 16-year-old, eight-pound cat says, “This little dog house is very durable, well insulated, easy to put together, and super easy to clean.”

Best easy-to-clean outdoor doghouse

Petsfit Dog House

This outdoor dog house comes in three sizes, but across the board reviewers are impressed by how well made it is and praise the fact that it opens from the roof. “This dog house appears sturdy, the roofing shingle top is not only classy but functional, the lifting lid is much appreciated by myself and my husband so that we don’t have to crawl into the dog house to change out the bedding,” one writes. Another reviewer points out, “You don’t have to disassemble it like other igloos to clean it out,” which makes it much easier to clean. Plus, if your dog isn’t a fan of the house at first, the roof helps. One reviewer whose pup was scared of the dog house at first says “Once we opened up the lid, so he could see it was not just a ‘black hole’ he went inside right away.” Reviewers also describe it as sturdy, like one who says, “the crossbars on the bottom give an incredible amount of rigidity to the base.” It’s so sturdy, it even held up to one reviewer’s pet fox: “Bought this for my fox for her outside enclosure. So far, it’s been through 2 hurricanes, a Florida summer, a 5-year-old, and a fox and it’s still perfect.”

Best easy-to-assemble outdoor doghouse

Aspen Pet PetBarn 3

One of the big selling points of this outdoor doghouse is that no tools are required to assemble it, and one reviewer reports that it took them just ten seconds, while another says, “You just set the roof on the bottom and it’s assembled.” And even though there might not be much holding it together, reviewers say it is sturdy. “My dogs like to sit on top of their houses and ‘guard’ the back yard and after having 2 of these houses for well over a year, they are still as durable as when they were delivered,” one pet owner says, adding, “I can sit on top of them with no problems (and I am over 200 pounds).” Another says, “They’re made from thick, heavy plastic that won’t get brittle and crack in cold weather.” Though they do warn that the doghouse itself is “not waterproof unless you duct tape over the four latch slots and shield the rear roof vent.” This outdoor doghouse also comes in a variety of sizes, for just about every pup. Reviewers report using the smallest one for a small dog or stray cats, while the largest size can hold so much: “Our dogs range in size from 70 pounds to 160 lbs, and even our big 160-pound Lab can fit into this house.”

Best insulated outdoor doghouse

$215

This doghouse “has double walls so it’s warmer in winter and cooler in summer,” writes one reviewer, and many other dog owners attest that this outdoor doghouse stays temperate year-round. “I have monitored the temperature on cold days inside her dog house (low 30s outside), and it stays in the 50-60 range if you place a cover on the door (like an old blanket),” says one reviewer. Another notes, “The interior really does stay cool — even in 100 degree plus Texas heat.” The temperature is adjustable to some extent, too. “The rear has a little sliding window up at the roof to let air circulate,” one reviewer points out. It’s also described as durable, even up against “Big Bad Buster who has destroyed previous dog houses,” says his owner, adding, “Believe me he tried with this one, but the rounded edges and durable plastic was too much for him.”

Best outdoor doghouse for winter

Petmate INDIGO W/MICROBAN
$126
$126

In many ways, this is just like a real-life igloo. This one is made out of plastic instead of ice, but other than that (and probably a few hundred other things), this will protect your dog from the elements and keep them warm all winter just the same — which is why reviewers love it so much. “The dogs have to sleep outside and this house seems to afford the most protection with it’s slightly angled tunnel opening,” one owner writes, though they took some additional precautions and added “a flap door to help keep out the wind (an extra) and a heated pad to go under their bed.” And while the outside of this doghouse may take a beating, many say it can withstand the elements. “Even with 100 degree heat in the summer down to winter time temps in the minus, this product holds up and does not discolor, warp or deteriorate,” one writes. This doghouse also comes in multiple sizes, but before you go buying your precious pup a mansion, reviewers say the medium size can hold up to two small dogs.
