My husband found us perfect dining table chairs at Home Depot last year. I have to confess that I did not know Home Depot even sold furniture, let alone nice furniture, and would not have even thought to look there, but fortunately my husband is a New Zealander and had no such preconceptions about Home Depot.
The chairs are acrylic and come in a transparent orange, but the color is quite subdued and would go with most other color themes in the home (and we have a very colorful home). The transparency of the material makes the room feel larger and less crowded than solid-colored or wooden chairs. They’re available in other colors and just plain clear, too.

For not having an outsize appearance, the chairs do have a somewhat big footprint because the legs extend out a bit beyond the seat. You have to get used to not stubbing your toe on them. The good news is you can stack them (two easily; four would need something to lean against) when not using them in order to save space, and they require little effort to stack since they’re lightweight.
The seat is large and comfortable enough that I have watched dinner guests linger around the dining table, settling in with their legs crisscrossed or one leg perched up to lean a chin against. The seat is slightly curved to comfortably cradle the sitter, and the back is high and broad enough to allow you to lean back comfortably without slouching. The acrylic gives the whole thing a certain softness and give even though there’s no cushioning.
With young children in the house, we think of a lot of our furniture as “starter furniture” and are not precious about how we treat it. Even so, these chairs have somehow avoided getting scratches or signs of heavy wear despite being used for multiple meals a day for over a year. They could easily be used inside and outside, needing little maintenance beyond a wipe-down with a soft cloth. We have hardwood floors, so we always put felt floor protectors under the legs of furniture to avoid scratches and did the same for these chairs.
I find myself often using this chair instead of my proper desk chair when I have a long day of working at my computer. And it isn’t just me using these chairs at all hours — my children have started doing their homework at the dining table, sitting on their knees on these chairs. My husband and I sit with them, the dining table becoming another shared family space, not just reserved for mealtimes.
