This beauty of a cake carrier came into my life thanks to my boyfriend, Pacifico, who bought it from a baking-supplies store near his apartment last year. Since then, it’s become our joint-custody baby — we pass it back and forth between our apartments depending on where we’re going that week and who is making what. (I am theking of bringing things, after all.)
Obviously, it shines in its original role as a cake carrier — with a lid tall enough for three layers, if you’re that kind of person. But the reason I evangelize about this thing to anyone who will listen is because it’s so much more than that. I’ve used it to lock in a Bundt cake for travel, piled stacks of cookies to shepherd across the city, and I’m not embarrassed to admit I’ve packed up leftovers from a dinner party and used this as a gigantic to-go container. It’s come with us to the beach loaded with sandwiches, and once, we even turned it into a portable charcuterie board for a picnic.

The design features are what make it my carrier of choice. The base has several rings of treads, which means cakes don’t slip while you’re bouncing around in an Uber. The carrier is roomy enough to fit full pans, like a nine-inch round cake pan, a springform pan, or a Bundt pan. But can we talk about the latches?! They’re the tightest, most trustworthy clips I’ve ever encountered on a piece of plastic. I would trust them with my life — or at least with a frosted birthday cake.
It also comes with a cupcake insert, which I’m realizing I’ve never once used for cupcakes. Instead, I discovered that the little wells are perfect for ferrying ramekins of sauces and dips without stressing about them spilling. And — can you believe we’re still not done? — if you flip the base over, the bottom is secretly a serving tray with four separate compartments and a center circle, which I’m sure you immediately realized is perfect for chips and dip, crudités and ranch, or sliced fruit and that sweet cream-cheese dip.
Listen, it’s not glamorous; it’s not artisanal; it’s not going to earn compliments sitting on your counter. But it’s useful, and I always want to invest in objects that earn loyalty through dependability. Every time I clip it shut — whether it’s guarding a layer cake or a stack of beach subs — I get the same quiet satisfaction: This goofy plastic dome has my back. It’s not just any old cake carrier; it’s a tray, a traveling buffet, a dessert bodyguard, and a faithful sidekick that always punches above its weight. So if you ever spot Pacifico and me on the L train holding our big plastic baby, just know this: The party’s about to get better.
