The Radish Is the New Tomato
Almost every year there crops up a produce du jour. A recent timeline: 2019’s cherry, 2020’s strawberry, 2022’s lemon, 2023’stomato. Since then there’s been a competition to be the next tomato; some short-lived, like rainbow chard and radicchio. But growing now is perhaps the unlikeliest root vegetable of all: the radish. They’ve popped up oneverything from a Tyler McGillivary x Lisa Says Gah farmer’s market tote to Rachel Antonoff for Anthropologie’s “house salad” print. My bet is that it comes in the form of lamps and cocktail napkins soon, too. Already, it’s gotten to dog bowls and hair clips. Maybe Loewe planted the seeds, with a runway showing painted radishes last year or red returning to the rest of ready-to-wear. Either way, it feels fresh.
