In this week’s edition ofSecret Strategist, I talked toRobert Khederian, anexpert on old housesand the author of SubstackSecond Story, about all the objects he notices in fancy apartments when he’s giving tours as a broker. One of these signifiers is the Cyprèscandlefrom French heritage-fragrance company Rigaud. (The candle is also one ofRoman Coppola’s favorite things: “I don’t remember a precise introduction to thiscandle; it was just something that was always around — at least in our house. I associate it with growing up in the ’70s, and it evokes memories of classy, beautiful settings.”) It’s sold at Zitomer Pharmacy in New York, naturally.

“If you need a holiday hostess gift, theRigaud Cyprès candlelooks very nice,” says Khederian. “It’s deep green, has a red bow, a shiny metal top — it looks like a Christmas present. It’s the official fancy-lady candle of the Upper East Side. The other night, I was having dinner atDonohue’s Steak House, and as I was walking down the block, I noticed that the old tiny 1960s pharmacy on the corner of 66th and Lexington, two doors down from the restaurant, had Rigaud candles all in the window because they know their audience.”
