In late December last year, the publication and retailer Food52filed for bankruptcy. The company was acquired by private-equity firm the Chernin Group in 2019 and became one of several brands involved in the firm’s ill-fated strategy ofmerging e-commerce and outlets with niche, loyal audiences. In 2021,amid a COVID-era boom, the company acquired Portland, Oregon–based home-goods store Schoolhouse andScandi cookware brand Dansk; now that the boom is over, the parent company is selling for $6.5 million toAmerica’s Test Kitchen, and it’s unclear what will happen to either acquisition.
Most of Schoolhouse’s staff were laid off last month, and from its website, it seems like the store is unloading most of its stock. Everything is on steep sale, up to 70 percent off, but many popular items — the brand’sStillwater quiltsandTeig lamps— redirect to 404 pages with no indication that they’ll return. I’ve gone through the remaining items to find the best bets, including bedding, rugs, and elegant chrome hardware. RIP to anotherbeloved brand.
