I’m 55. Where do I start? How much do I spend?

Can you suggest a regimen of products/treatments at different budget points for someone at age 55?
For example: If one had $1k/$5k/$10K/$15K to spend in a year, how should one spend it to get the biggest bang for their buck?
What combination of Products/Devices/In-office treatments/Supplements would be the best investment in turning back the clock?

For products, save your money on cleansers and moisturizers, but I’d invest in a good vitamin C serum and a good retinoid. And, as always, invest your time in applying SPF throughout the day.

For devices, I’d recommend an LED face mask and a microcurrent device. I personally use theCurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask: Series 2and theZIIP Halo.

As for supplements, those are tricky and probably a conversation for you and your doctor, but on the beauty front I’ve had derms recommendNutrafol Hair-Growth Supplementsto keep hair looking healthy and full. (I also take fish oil and probiotics for skin health.)

Now, on to treatments. This really depends on what you’re trying to treat. For basic skin maintenance, a monthly to quarterly facial is always a good idea (with add-ons like chemical peels/microcurrent/LED therapy/dermaplaning etc at your providers discretion). Cost: ~200-300 a pop.

For smoothing of wrinkles/fine lines/acne scars, microneedling (with or without PRP) is a good option. Usually starts at $400 a treatment and you would need 3-4 spaced apart for best results.

For more serious resurfacing or skin tightening, you can go with a laser (Fraxel, CO2, Aerolase, IPL, RF, Laser Genesis). The downtime for each of these really varies. And make sure you find a provider you trust who can point you to the right one, especially if you have melanin in your skin!!! These start around $500 a pop and can go up to $1,200.

And, of course, there’s always injectables like botox and filler which most people get one to two times a year. The price will depend on how much you need, but you can expect to pay around ~300-600 for Botox and $500-$1200 for filler.

Can you recommend a “cosmetically elegant” U.S.-made sunscreen?

Oh also, two sunscreen questions-- first, what are the most cosmetically elegant sunscreens available on the US market right now? Second, what are some reputable places to get imported sunscreens from Japan/Korea? My holy grail is Nivea Water Gel, but as Asian sunscreen has gotten popular I've started to get worried about fakes

Of all the sunscreens I've tested, I've been most impressed by the lightweight ones like this one (https://us.allies.shop/products/sunless-tan-spf-50-daily-self-tanner) from Allies of Skin and the perennial favorite EltaMD (https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=29069&awinaffid=173843&clickref=StratLive102425&ued=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dermstore.com%2Fp%2Feltamd-uv-clear-broad-spectrum-spf46-48g%2F11370303%2F). The Allies of Skin is whisper light, sinks in quickly and smells nice. The Elta one is a little thicker and lotion-y, but feels like a moisturizer and not the unique viscosity of some SPF (some feel almost like wet clay to me).

As far as imported sunscreens, I trust spots like Soko Glam, which have been around for a while. Another K Beauty store, Senti Senti has a brick and mortar in Brooklyn but also sells online. I've also heard good things about YesStyle, though I haven't ordered from there yet. Planning to so I can re-up on my favorite CosRx Sunscreen (https://go.skimresources.com?id=1025X1552619&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yesstyle.com%2Fen%2Ftcuc.USD%2Fcoc.US%2Finfo.html%2Fpid.1128819058&xcust=StratLive102425), which I can't get anywhere in the US.

I’m in my mid-40s, and my mouth is starting to change shape. What can I do?

I don’t have a great skin-care answer for you here. Nothing topical will help this. The NuFACE may lift a little bit so it’s worth a try. To get any type of lasting results though, you have to be very diligent —5 days a week for at least a few months. But perioral mounds are the result of deep structural changes in the face and that’s why topicals and tools don’t help. If you are open to in-office treatments like hyaluronic acid filler, Sculptra and skin tightening may help. You’d have to find a dermatologist in your area to get a consultation for those (and depending on your budget they’re quite expensive) but could be worth looking into if the mounds are really bothering you.

What’s the most effective peptide?

What are the most effective peptide products on the market? Are there actually any non-invasive treatments that can make a meaningful difference in facial sagging/laxity?

Effectiveness is a tough metric because what works for one person may not work for the other, but I would recommend stick to products that have clinical data attached, even if it's not a ton. That ensures there's something backing up the brand's claims which increases the chances that it'll work. I like this gel cream moisturizer from Paula's choice (https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=OHlcvPYhHQM&mid=2417&murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sephora.com%2Fproduct%2Fpro-collagen-peptide-plumping-gel-cream-moisturizer-P514671%3F&u1=StratLive102425) which is lightweight and has three kinds of peptides that helps with fine lines, boosting collagen, and supporting the skin's moisture balance. Also a fan of this Allies of Skin treatment (https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=29069&awinaffid=173843&clickref=StratLive102425&ued=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dermstore.com%2Fp%2Fallies-of-skin-peptides-and-antioxidants-advanced-firming-daily-treatment-20ml%2F15298411%2F) which comes recommended by cosmetic chemist Dr. Julian Sass.

Are laser facials worth it?

Are laser facials worth it? For example, does doing a 4-month membership at a space like Skin Laundry support with reducing wrinkles in the long term?

Our answer:

arielle.avila
October 24, 2025 at 4:16 PM

If you’re wanting to prevent moderate fine lines and improve overall skin tone and texture, it is, especially since these types of facials rely on consistency for long-term results. The caveat: if you’re dealing with deeper wrinkles or wanting a dramatic change, laser facials at Skin Laundry probably aren’t your one-and-done solution. They use non-ablative lasers, meaning they penetrate the top layer of skin but don't remove the top layer. You might need to look into a stronger laser type than the ones offered at Skin Laundry.

Where do I even start with in-office treatments?

What are good resources for understanding and evaluating in-office treatments? I see all kinds of treatments offered like different injections or types of facials but don’t know how to figure out which ones are worth the expense.

Our answer:

crystal.martin

I think Real Self can be helpful for that. But here’s the thing: I think we get too fixated on specific treatments, meaning people hear about a brand of laser or filler and then they want to pursue that specific thing. And that is the result of very good marketing. But your skin should really guide the process. Start your research by evaluating what your specific issues are. What on your face concerns you? That way you can narrow down the treatments that you’re even looking into. I say this to you because you mentioned two treatment types that are very different: injections and facials. Think of facials more like skin care. They're not going to correct major facial aging.
