The $26 Los Angeles Apparel Shirt I’ve Been Wearing Everywhere

Since March, Los Angeles Apparel’s garment-dye crewneck had sat at the bottom of my laundry hamper, collecting dust. To this day, I’m not quite sure how it found its way to me. While my friends and I don’t exchange clothing often, there are choice pieces we’ve thrifted over time that’ll float between us (like a Champion crewneck from the 2010s Istilllay claim to that’s not in my possession). Maybe this shirt was one of those pieces. But after finally washing it one day in July, I realized the answer to myshirtquandary — something vaguely reminiscent of the madly plain and nearly $600 crewneck byThe Rowbut not actually $600 — was under my nose the entire time.
I’ve lost track of the dozen or socrewnecksI’ve tried over the years. There were the unnecessarily slim bodices and sleeves on shirts fromTkees,Reformation, andAritzia, that, even after sizing up one or two times, were cropped above or at my hips. Many white ones were sheer, something I didn’t want in a style like this. Then the collars that were too thin, too low, or too wide. I dabbled inmen’sbasics fromGap FactoryandHanes, hoping the ultimate hack would lead me to baggy gold. But none quite nailed the look I was going for, the ones I often see on my street-style muse Jennifer Lawrence. I went so far as to most recently call in the non-RowGirlfriend Teesthat Lawrence apparently keeps in her rotation fromGoldie. And while I very much enjoy how soft the organic cotton is, the layering I’ve been able to achieve while wearing two at a time, and the fact that they are comfortably loose and light throughout, they didn’t scratch my itch for a more masculine and longer-fitting top.

When I first slipped on the Los Angeles Apparel one, I was struck immediately by the stiffness and heft of its 100 percent cotton. The top felt and lookedheavy, actually kept its form, and fit straightly throughout, from midsection to arms — but not uncomfortably so, still breathable. A size medium is the perfect length and amount of oversize on me, intentional but not Adam Sandler–y. I’ve worn it mostly untucked, where the hem reaches my upper thighs in a flattering, tuniclike way. What I especially appreciate are the subtle details of its build: the collar’s thick and ribbed high neck, the stitching on the drop shoulders that make the sleeves droop slightly and hover right at my elbows. The top hasn’t shrunk or lost its shape, whether air- or machine-dried, and its navy color has only looked more lived in, not faded.
It somehow comes in 58 colors, and even though I only own it in one, I’ve had a hard timenotreaching for it every single day of the week. I wear it to the office with silk pants, with a maxi skirt and heels for dinner and drinks, with cutoffs and flip-flops for a walk. It’s simple, straightforward, and versatile. I’m using all of my self control to keep myself from purchasing ten more.
