When it comes tojeans, I’m on the record asa traditionalist: 100 percent cotton denim, brass hardware, and chain-stitched hems should be table stakes for a solid pair. Which is why it’s a bit embarrassing to admit that theFleecedenim Winter Jeans, from Swedish brand Nothings Something, have become my go-to winter pants. In addition to being fleece lined on the inside, the denim-blend exterior contains 14 percent Tencel for extra softness and 2 percent spandex for stretch. As a result, they look and fit like a modern wide-leg jean yet feel as cozy assweatpants.

As a lifelong outdoor enthusiast, I’ve always been taught that layering is the best way to stay warm in cold weather. And yet, I consistently feel warmer in these fleece-lined pants than I do when wearinglong underwearunder regular jeans. I suspect this is because the fleece lining keeps the entire interior warm, whereas the long underwear traps heat closer to the skin, allowing the cold to permeate and freeze the denim. I was initially concerned that the soft, stretchy fabric would be less wind resistant than heavier cotton denim, but, during testing, I found it actually felt more protective against gusts. (In retrospect, I should’ve trusted that the Scandinavian designers would’ve anticipated this.)

The Winter Jeans come in a dark-blue stonewash with pewter hardware or a deep black with tonal hardware. Both colors accommodate waists from 30 to 37 inches around and are available in 30-, 32-, or 34-inch inseams. If you plan to put them in a dryer, I’d recommend going with a longer inseam. I ordered the dark blue in a 30 x 32, and they fit me perfectly out of the bag. But the inseam shrank by two inches after the first time I washed them on cold and dried them on low. This gives them a slightly cropped look, which wasn’t what I was hoping for but actually pairs quite well withwinter boots, so it actually ended up being fine.
