When Strategist deputy editor Maxine Builder tested the best premade emergency-preparedness kits, she found this one from Unchartered Supply Co. to be “the most comfortable” and the most like her technical backpack, thanks to adjustable lumbar and chest straps. She was also impressed by the high-quality technical gear inside the pack — as was Shane Hobel, the founder of the Mountain Scout Survival School in Beacon, New York, who reviewed the bags with her. The pack comes with a smartphone charger, a radio, a flashlight, filtration masks, a fire-starter, a small knife and a whole host of other gear you might need during an emergency. And it’s currently marked down 31 percent, saving you $120. If a bug-out bag is a little too much for your preparedness levels, you can also pick up a less intense first-aid kit, which is down to only $25.
