I’ve always loved theideaof stain-y makeup. A wash of color that melts into your skin, stays put, and lasts all day — through heat, drinks, meals, kisses, and whatever else life throws your way — sounds like a dream.
But in practice, I’ve found stain formulas can be underperformers. Sometimes a lip stain clings to dry patches and fades unevenly from the center, leaving that ring (a personal pet peeve). Or a cheek stain dries down almost instantly, making blending a race against time (and uneven patches). And then there are formulas that claim to stain but wear more like a sheer veil of color that fades far too quickly.
The inconsistency of stains sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole recently, sleuthing online and reading a concerning amount of reviews in hopes of finding the very best stains out there. Then I decided to take it upon myself to test a bunch of products … extensively.
I tried roughly ten to 20 products in each of my “stain categories” across every price point from drugstore to designer, looking for formulas that actually deliver on that original fantasy of long-lasting flushes of color that stay put and wear beautifully throughout the day.
These are the ones that made the cut — the very best stains, in my opinion, across lip, lip liner, cheek, and allover color.
Best Lip Stain: Wonderskin Lip Stain

When I looked into lip stains, this one kept coming up again and again as a fan favorite (I saw that both actress Aimee Lou Wood and makeup artist Pati Dubroff are fans, and I noticed theLove Islandcastis always applying it in the show’s glam room). So I was excited to test it, and it did not disappoint.
What makes it fundamentally different from almost every other lip stain I’ve used — and for this story alone, I tried 12 — is how it works. Instead of sitting on top of the lips like a watery tint or glossy stain, this uses what the brand calls “liquid blading” technology, essentially depositing dye directly into the top layer of the skin before you wipe or peel off what you’ve applied. This product goes on as a truly insane-looking bright metallic blue, then after a few minutes, you can either peel it off or wipe it away with a makeup wipe or damp cloth. I personally prefer wiping it for an easier, cleaner removal.
Traditional formulas likeEtude House water tintsor even newer glossy stains likeFenty Beauty Poutsicle, tend to wear off first in the center of the mouth, leaving the ring that immediately gives away that you’re wearing a stain. Wonderskin, however, really stays on. Once it’s set, it doesn’t seem to migrate or break down unevenly.
I also really loved the texture and blurry finish of the Korean-beauty cult-favoriteRom&nd’s Juicy Lasting Tint in the shade Bare Grape, but it faded in a matter of minutes — one meal and it was quite literally nowhere to be found.
Wonderskin, I learned, performs so much better because it works as a true stain, infusing color directly into the skin on your lips rather than just coating them, which makes it fade evenly and last much longer.
Another common issue this lip stain avoids is patchiness. Many stains cling to dryness or texture, but because of its hydrating formula, this one sets more uniformly so the end result looks soft and diffused, not blotchy. It thrives in situations where you truly do not want to think about your lip product at all, like long workdays, dinners, or nights out when you’re eating and drinking.
I really love the shade Whimsical, a dusty rose, and XOXO, a lighter, more baby-pink shade.
At around $22, this stain sits at a midrange price point, but it performs like something more specialized. On the lips, it reads as your natural lip color but deeper and more even, rather than looking like a layer of product.
Best Cheek Stain: Milk Makeup Cooling Water Jelly Tint

I’ll be honest, I’ve been using this product for over two years now, ever since I saw a video of Billie Eilish applying her tour makeup and noticed she was using the poppy-pink shade Burst. But during my deep dive, I really put this Milk product through its paces, comparing it against a long list of other cheek stains, and was pleased that it still came out on top.
I think the reason this works so well comes down to texture. Most true cheek stains, like Benefit Cosmetics Benetint or E.l.f. watery blush tints, are so thin and liquidlike that they either disappear almost immediately or grab on to the skin the second you apply them, making them difficult to blend without patchiness.
This Milk blush has a very strange, almost playful-looking bouncy jelly texture, which at first glance may seem a little gimmicky but it’s really not. That very texture provides just enough slip to blend the color evenly into the skin before it sets, creating a natural, flushlike finish that lasts.
I don’t apply it directly to my cheeks; instead, I swirl a stippling brush in the product and build it up gradually. Buffing it on in thin layers like this, you give yourself more time to blend, rather than applying a big streak and racing to work it in. Applied this way, it looks incredibly natural, like a true flush coming from within, not sitting on top. And once it sets, it truly stays put for hours without fading or shifting, even in the heat.
It’s worth clarifying that it is not technically a pH-adjusting product in the way a lot of cheek stains are marketed. The shades are preset but designed in a way that reads as very natural across different skin tones, which may be why it can seem to adapt to your complexion.
The color range itself is also particularly well done, with tones that mimic a pretty, sun-kissed flush rather than looking overly bright or artificial. I’ve tried a few, but my favorite shade of them all isSplash, a gorgeous cool-toned berry.
Where it really excels, I think, is in hot weather or on bare-skin days. I really put this to the test during a hike on an 80-degree day in Los Angeles. And I’m telling you, people, it did not budge!
At around $26, it’s mid-tier priced, but it lasts forever so it’s well worth the money.

Best Lip-Liner Stain: Covergirl Outlast Lipstain

This is one of those categories in which most products really don’t deliver on what they promise. I’ll be honest, I actually really lovethe lip stain from Sacheu Beauty— I think it gives beautiful, long-lasting results, and I’m obsessed with the shade MUAH-ve. But I also hear from a lot of family and friends that it’s just too fussy for the average non-makeup-versed person. I get it because it involves a lot of careful peeling and making sure you apply just the right amount so it comes off cleanly. It’s quite messy.
So after much trial and error in hopes of finding something a little more user-friendly, I landed on this Covergirl Lipstain after watching an interview with actress Ariana Greenblatt, who mentioned it’s one of her all-time favorites.
What I love most about this product is its marker-style applicator, which lets you sketch your lips with precision while depositing a lightweight stain. It’s really easy to apply as well as buff out for a super-seamless finish: All you have to do is draw it onto your lips, and while the product still looks a little wet, use your finger (or the applicator of your favorite lip balm) to blend it out.
Instead of breaking apart or disappearing unevenly, it softens into a diffused outline that still gives the lips shape. This makes it especially good for creating that slightly overlined, blurred lip look that holds up throughout the day.
As far as shades go, I’ve been really loving the most recent addition to the lineup, Iconic Darling, a warm-toned, neutral browny-pink.
At under $10, it outperforms many more expensive options. On the lips, it looks like a natural shadow or contour rather than a drawn-on line and continues to look that way even after you eat.
