Sofia Coppola has officially but reluctantlyjoined Instagram. “There’s so much oversharing now, and I still wanna retain some sense of privacy,” the filmmaker tellsVoguein an interview announcing her new account. “I know I personally wouldn’t wanna know what my film heroes eat for breakfast every day.”
Accordingly, her first grid post doesn’t contain any croissants — but we do see the pen she’s been using to annotate the script for her upcoming Priscilla Presley biopicPriscilla, which is actually a much more intimate reveal.
It turns out that Coppola’s nib of choice is a Pilot V-Sign. The Strategist loves a Pilot pen — 18 of them made our100 Best Penslist — but this one had escaped our attention until now. A little bolder than your average fine-liner, it’s a liquid-ink 2.0-mm. soft tip that allows for a certain dramatic flair on the page. The effect is Sharpie-like yet elegant. While Coppola’s is a classic black, the V-Sign is also available in blue, red, and green ink.
The woman who launched 10,000 Tumblr accounts, Coppola is an aesthete with long-established lettering credentials. In 2017, shetoldWmagazinethat artist Sara Cwynar’s ode to the ballpoint,Pictures of Pens, was pinned to the bulletin board in her office. She’s also known to usepersonalized stationeryfrom Smythson and Benneton Graveur.
