This is the year I turn 30. And while the idea of “turning 30” might’ve given me a sense of existential dread at 22, or inspired me to buy a self-help book at 26, I’ll be blowing out my birthday candles with tears of joy in my eyes. I’m young, but not so young as to not know myself better. I can tell I’m going to like my 30s more than my 20s. (I get to check off the “30-35” box now in the demographic portions of questionnaires. I can hear Samantha Jones’s “Honey, welcome to my box” as I say this.) Superficially, I haven’t liked saying “I’m 29” for the last year (27, sure; 28, yes; 29, no). It’s as embarrassing as being 12 or 17 or 25 for some reason. It wouldn’t be a birthday if I didn’t get myself a birthday present. I could get something that forces me to confront my own mortality. Or the fragility of life. But I don’t want any of that. I want a nice pair of shoes. Here’s what I’m considering:

From our “111 Carefully Selected, Unusually Special Gifts Over $200”: Herbert Levine’s back under creative director Trevor Houston, who’s the former shoe designer for The Row. AsHerbert Levine’s in the Met, this would feel like owning a piece of fashion history.

Like the dancing slippers of Joséphine de Beauharnais, Souliers Dulions are made from silk (which is supplied byVeraseta). The only thing stopping me is the fine print around customs duties, withtariffsaveraging at around $30 for U.S. customers. (It might sound silly, but if a $9.99 shipping fee makes me exit out of a checkout …)

[Editor’s note: Souliers Dulion lists its prices in euros, so this is an approximation to dollars.]

I don’t have any justification for these other than likingstripes. I believe that’s justification enough?

Here’s everything else I’ve seen recently …

The best time to get new marked-down sandals is in the middle of winter. I have wanted these Tory Burch wedge flip-flops since last summer. (Maybe convinced by an installment of Liana Satenstein’snewsletter.) It has something to do with the freestyle swimmers. They’re fun, as much as an umbrella in a piña colada is. (I also managed to get the Prada Re-Edition 1996 slingbacks on sale recently after seeing what I believe to be them on everyone from Rachel Tashjian toHansel from Basel models. Theyretailfor $1,250, but there’s a size 11 atNordstromfor $480, or a size eight starts at $726 atCettire.)

By all means, buy theBlack+Blum Prada travel cupfor $260. Or do yourself the favor of buying the non-PradaBlack+Blum travel cup. I sip from it every morning a little easier, knowing I made one easy payment of $24.95 (plus tax).

I get migraines regularly. Could a chintz ice cap help? I’m not entirely sure. Maybe I’ll feel less like a dying Charles Dickens character and more like an inconvenienced Queen Victoria with it on my head. This is a print of French mill Brunschwig & Fils’ Abigail chintz. (George Eliot is credited with using the wordchintzyfor the first time in a letter to her sister.)

I could get eight hours of sleep. I could get four hours of sleep. It doesn’t matter. I’ll look tired. That is, unless I use a little bit of this on my under-eye area. It’s formulated with Greek yogurt (for hydration), peptides (to reduce puffiness), and caffeine (to boost circulation). The effect is immediate, and it’s better thanSunday Riley’s Autocorrect(which also has caffeine, along with ginseng and horse chestnut).

As a person who’s spent her formative years in front ofdepartment-storecounters (and who has watchedScatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’sa few times), I’d love nothing more than to smell like “Fifth Avenue where the lilac winds of Central Park blow upon Bergdorf’s.”

According to the Catholic Church, I’m a Catholic; but with the exception of feeling a sense of guilt over everything, I’m not a Catholic in any way. This doesn’t mean I wouldn’t mind trying a mint with theholy waterfrom theSanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes’s Grotto of Massabielle (a pilgrimage site in the Pyrenees region). In 1858, Bernadette Soubirous claimed the “Immaculate Conception” appeared to her nearby. I wonder if it tastes anything like Holy Communion? Other than ecclesiastical websites (many of which haven’t changed since Jeff Bezos’s Amazon was out of his garage, seemingly), they’re available at Choosing Keeping (whereSimone Rochagets her mechanical pencils).

Call me sentimental, but this plushie reminds me of Laura Gilpin’s “The Two-Headed Calf.” I know 8-year-old me would’ve wanted one. Each is made-to-order, and you can pick from a deer, lamb, rat, cow, bat, bunny, snail, worm, seahorse, goat (or put in a special request for another Beanie). I sent this to my friend and co-workerErin Schwartz(we have an agreement to message each other weird things) almost immediately and they messaged me back with a “biblically accurate Squishmallow.” Jellycats, you’re over!

I’m not embarrassed about having Guest in Residencecashmere, but I can’t believe it’s Gigi Hadid’s brand. This has nothing to do with Gigi Hadid; I just can’t wrap my head around buying anything from a cast member of theReal Housewives of Beverly Hills. (Her mother, Yolanda, was on the show from seasons three to six.) It’s a me thing! All that matters is Gigi Hadid knows how to make some good cashmere. I don’tneeda third Guest in Residence knit … (I’ll keep telling myself this until there’s no moresale.)

In 1903, the Romanovs hosted acostume partywith guests wearing recreations of 16th-century styles by artist Sergey Solomko. Czar Nicholas even went as his ancestor,Alexei Mikhailovich(son of the firsttsarfrom the House of Romanov). I couldn’t help thinking about it when buying this Destree jacket (when it was marked down at Net-a-Porter). It’s really beautifully made.
