As the eldest of four siblings, I’m used to seeingoh-so-familiarclothes on my younger sisters. My graphic tees from Justice (the ones withpeace signsandpersonified foods) graduated elementary school thrice, and my Mini Boden dresses have probably been on more family vacations than my younger sister. Even now, I find my sisters, 14 and 18, walking around in the sweatshirts and dresses I left in my childhood bedroom.
Last summer, though, my youngest sister and I switched roles: While we were on vacation for the Fourth of July, she walked out of her room in an eggshell-colored crochet cover-up that looked right out of my Pinterest board. It had subtle scalloping on the hems and loose crochet loops that varied in size, making a discreet striped pattern. I asked her if I could feel it — the texture reminded me of a friendship bracelet that had been softened from a summer of play — and then immediately bought one for myself. At last, it was my turn to become the influencee. (Though I’d like to say my hand-me-downs are partially responsible for her good taste.)

The cover-up in question looks right out ofWhite Lotus’s third season but it’s priced for aSpring Breakers’sbudget. It’s from one of those random Amazon brands — Anrabess, to be specific — and costs between $30 and $36 depending on the color you get. When my sister and I both wear our matching cream-toned cover-ups, we look so similar from afar that our dad calls us the wrong name. Perhaps I’ll ease the confusion by getting another color (theblackone feels especially chic), but my ivory cover-up is showing no signs of wear after a year of being shoved in beach bags and suitcases, so I see no reason to buy another. I even spilled the majority of my coffee on it during a beach walk, and the remnants came out after a couple washes.
In terms of sizing, my sister (five-foot-one) and I (five-foot-three) both ordered a small, which fits loosely, almost like a T-shirt dress, and it’s available up to a size extra-extra large. I like that the sleeves are wide and flowy, making me feel like a youngStevie Nicks. The cover-up itself is heavy enough that it provides some warmth on cooler, windy beach days, but it’s still lightweight enough that I can wear it on those sticky summer days when I just want to wear linen tops andpoplin shorts. Especially during this ongoing heat wave, it’s been just what I want to wear over a swimsuit when I’m not in a body of water. The eyeletlike crochet design allows the color of your swimsuit to peek through along with some much-needed relief from summer breezes.
Just about every time I’ve thrown on the cover-up since it arrived last Fourth of July, I’ve been asked where it’s from. Sheepishly, maybe, I’ll say Amazon, but I’m never shy to share the link. So far, it has looked just as natural in vacation photos taken at a beach town in Mexico as it does while walking on the beach off the coast of Maine, and I can’t imagine myself traveling without it during any summer vacations for years to come.
