We’re All Buying Custom LEGO Minifigs for Father’s Day
There are dozens of gifts you could buy for Father’s Day, but one of the simplest ways to make the dad in your life feel special is by creating a custom LEGO Minifigure in his likeness. LEGO offers this service through its online Minifigure Factory where, in a matter of minutes, you can transform your dad (or anyone else) into a 1.5-inch LEGO icon with almost any style of hair and facial expression. Of course, dads who like building with LEGO or have a tradition of building with their kids will be especially appreciative. But you don’t have to be a LEGO-head to get a kick out of unwrapping your own personalized minifig.
You can tailor your minifigure’s clothing, choosing simple solid-colored tops and bottoms or highly specific formalwear, professional uniforms, and sports outfits. There are tuxedos, soccer jerseys, doctor’s coats, argyle sweaters, and even a tie-dye T-shirt, as well as a variety of hoodies and puffer vests. Each minifigure also comes with an accessory that you can select from a long list of animals (including cats, a spider, and a rubber duck), tools (wrench, magnifying glass, cell phone, whisk), and snacks (coffee mug, soft pretzel, banana, pizza). And if you don’t find precisely what you’re looking for, you can peruse LEGO’s extensive collection of à la carte pieces, called Pick a Brick, and add any number of extra accessories to your order. The animal section is especially fun to scroll through with a corgi, multiple butterflies, a salamander, and a Hulk hand currently available.

But my favorite part of the design process is adding flair to a minifigure’s torso. Say your dad is obsessed with gardening or his nickname in college was “eggman”; you can add illustrations of both to his minifigure’s shirt. And you don’t have to pick just one, either — I was able to add over a dozen and could have kept going. There are scores of different motifs, images, and symbols to choose from that you can place and resize, including a tick, a pocket with a leaking pen, a squid, a treasure map, a tool belt, and a stethoscope. Finally, you can add up to 20 characters of text, with 12 different font options, to any part of the shirt front or back.
While most personalized Father’s Day gifts take at least a week to produce and ship, a custom LEGO minifigure often takes just one business day to process (according to LEGO, they have a similar timeline to normal LEGO.com orders) before it’s shipped to you. So even procrastinators currently have plenty of time to order. One minifigure costs just $12, so if you want, you could affordably design a whole custom family for Dad to keep on his desk. This year I am planning on doing exactly that and using the shortest-size legs for the minifigure portrait of my toddler son.
