Perhaps you’ve entertained this TikTok query: Are you big top, little pants; little top, big pants; little top, little pants; or big top, big pants? You don’t have to choose just one, but in the last few years, I’ve really come into my own as a big-pants person. I crave comfort, function, and the confidence big pants broadcast. That said, at five-foot-two, hemming and tailoring is nearly always a requirement for me, and baggy or “relaxed” fits can thwart my coming off as a put-together adult. So when barrel-cut jeans — which offer the looseness of wide-leg pants but with an often shorter inseam that tapers in at the ankle — came back into style, I was intrigued. And I was evenmoreintrigued when I first saw Gap’s pair of especially barrel-like barrel jeans, called the Horseshoe.

I spotted the Horseshoe jeans while shopping for some basics during one of Gap’s frequent sales a few months ago. The name suggests a bow-legged cowboy dueling stance — it brings to mind that photo ofJohn Lennon walking like thator David Bowie inthose pants. However, the overall effect of the Horseshoe is a modest one with leisurely volume. I admired their rounded cut, which has a slightly more exaggerated parentheses shape than the usual barrel leg. Gap is one of the few mainstream retailers that offers petite sizing, so I’d already been able to wear a few of its jeans sans tailor. Since the Horseshoe jeans were made to be ankle length and I wanted a full-length pair, I added the washed-black color with the regular hem length to my cart.

Let me tell you: My knees have never had such luxurious personal space without enduring the humiliating flapping of trulywidewide-leg pants (which, depending on the material, sometimes get eaten by your crotch as you walk). I was glad I got the regular length because they hit perfectly floor length on me barefoot. With an added inch or two from shoe height, they drape elegantly at the bottom with a little puddle at the front but no dragging in the back: a perfect length and break. Despite them being labeled as high-rise, the waist sat mid-rise on me, which I prefer. They very quickly fell into frequent rotation in my daily wardrobe.

Never in my life have I received so many compliments on a pair of jeans. While jeans are often admired for how they show off your figure, these casual leg cocoons reveal neither butt nor thigh. Instead, they emanate a sense of ease and functional style, looking casually flowy while not swallowing my footwear in their gaping maws. One time, when I was wearing them, a woman stopped at a light as I crossed the road and rolled down her window to ask where I got them. “The Gap!” I replied triumphantly, to which she said, “Oooh girl, I’m going!” and gave me a thumbs-up.

I’ve since acquired three more pairs: a mid-wash denim blue and off-white versions in the classic high-rise and theMid Rise UltraSoft Easy Horseshoe Jeans(which is basically the same thing but with an elastic waistband and a drawstring tie instead of a button and zip fly). I wear them with all sorts of shoes: sneakers, sandals, boots, mules — they all work. They make me feel comfortable and put together in a languidly confident sort of way. I’d buy the black mid-rise ones, too, if they ever restock them in my size. I know it’s entirely possible that balloon, barrel, or, in Gap parlance, “horseshoe” pants may not remain a timeless style — but now that I’ve found something that looks good on me and, more important, feels good, these parentheses jeans have solidly entered my own pantheon of personal style. Period.
