The Only Exercise Dress I’ll Wear When I’m Not Working Out

I started tennis lessons for the first time ever around two years ago. It’s taken me that long for my forehand to even resemble an actual tennis stroke, but I am, blessedly, seeing results. (Shout-out to my coach, Woody, at theProspect Park Tennis Center.) My progress has been slow and often frustrating — also affected by a pesky wrist injury — but getting dressed for time on the court is a pleasure in itself.
Tennis arguably has some of the best aesthetics in sports, and I committed to the look: tennis whites, the pleated skirts, a visor. The one piece of activewear I keep coming back to, however, is this workout dress from Prana. It has an A-line cut, adjustable straps, a scoop neck, and a supportive built-in shelf bra and shorts with a side pocket — all standard features of an exercise dress, yes — but what I love most is how freely I can move in it.

It has a fitted layer that’s connected to the shorties and a loose outer layer that makes up the dress part, so it’s compressive on the inside but not clingy on the outside. Other workout dresses I’ve tried have been too restrictive and frankly unflattering, accentuating bulges I’d rather smooth. It’s black, plain, and sporty — not precious, in other words, the way some tennis clothing can be — and the moisture-wicking fabric is soft, stretchy, and durable. I don’t have to worry about my shorts riding up when I’m in the ready position or accidentally flashing my opponent when I’m going for an overhead shot. I can also easily tuck balls into the underside of the shorts or even fit a couple into the patch pocket, which usually holds my phone.
I normally change out of my activewear as soon as I finish a workout, but I keep this dress on because it’s so comfortable, especially on the weekend. It’s cute enough to run errands in and is great for chasing after my two kids and, of course, tennis balls.
