As long as I can remember, I’ve loved a thick moisturizer. When I was in high school and applying clindamycin gel to my face every night, I would top it off with a dollop ofBurt’s Bees Almond and Milk Hand Cream(kind of nuts, in retrospect). In my mid-20s, I rationed out pumps of Drunk Elephant’sLala Retro Whipped Cream Moisturizer(when I wanted to save money, I globbed onCeraVe’s Moisturizing Creaminstead). And last year, when I started using the prescription retinol Altreno, I knew it was time to double down on thick creams, so I ordered three packs ofLa Roche-Posay’s Cicaplast Balm B5, a “healing ointment” that comes in tubes so small they look like they’re meant for dry-skin emergencies, not twice-a-day use. The La Roche-Posay worked well for a while, but eventually I noticed my skin flaking under my makeup by the end of the day — and so it was time to find a new thick moisturizer that wouldn’t cause breakouts or trigger my occasional perioral dermatitis and, crucially, would keep any irritation from the retinol under control.
I’d heard plenty about Sofie Pavitt’s line and, to be honest, felt skeptical of the stylish packaging and buzziness of it all. But when Rio included the newOmega Rich Moisturizerin her updatedskin-care doc, calling it “the moisturizer to end all moisturizers,” I took her recommendation seriously. The next time I was in Sephora, I tried out the cream on a dry patch on my forehead and pretty much immediately looked glowier. I purchased my first jar and applied it over my retinol that night using the little spatula that’s included with the cream. The next morning, my skin felt bouncy, well-hydrated, and looked a little brighter. While some thick moisturizers have made my skin oily by the morning, this one simply seemed to sink into my skin, leaving it neither greasy nor dry by the time I woke up. Since that morning, I’ve now purchased three jars of the cream and am about to buy my fourth.
It had occurred to me that the cream — which counts skin-barrier-supporting omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, smoothing squalane, and hydrating jojoba and argan oils as the headliner ingredients — might be too thick to wear under my Elta MD sunscreen and makeup in the morning. Luckily, that has not been the case at all: The cream layers on smoothly under my sunscreen and tinted moisturizer, and by the end of the day there is nary a flake on even the driest parts of my face. The cream is also gentle enough that I can put it around my eyes, and I’ve found that it moisturizes that area even better than actual eye creams I’ve tried. The best part, though, is that this cream absolutely feels like something that would clog your pores, and it simply doesn’t. It is truly the most comedogenic-feeling noncomedogenic cream I’ve ever tried. Over the many times I’ve used thick moisturizers, I’ve had some cause tiny clogged pores, others cause breakouts, and some kick off perioral dermatitis. This one simply sinks into my skin and keeps it moisturized all day.
