Here at the Strategist, we love hearing about everyday stuff that actually works. That line of thinking extends to the drugstore beauty products in our medicine cabinets, shower caddies, and makeup bags. In our series “Beauty Aisle,” we talk to folks in the beauty industry — aestheticians, hairstylists, makeup artists, dermatologists, and the like — about the go-to affordable products they keep stocked. For this installment, Strategist writerArielle Avilachatted withIris+Westfounder Amanda Robinson about the drugstore products she loves.
Her nostalgic sunscreen

I love the way thissunscreensmells, and I really prefer the lotion texture too. There’s something so nostalgic about rubbing in sunscreen versus spraying it. And honestly, I just hate the whole experience of aerosol sunscreen. I never know if I’m actually getting it in the right places; half of it seems to end up in the air instead of on my skin.
Her effective-yet-subtle deodorant

I’ve been using this for probably seven or eight years now. I went through a phase of trying the more naturaldeodorants, and, unfortunately, they just don’t work for me. The scent isn’t overwhelming, which I appreciate because I’m in such close proximity to people’s faces all day, and it works from morning until I leave the studio. The last thing I want at work is to be worrying about what’s happening with my underarms. This one is just so reliable that I’ll probably use it forever.
Her quick-drying top coat

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Nail Coat
I rarely get mynailsprofessionally done. I’m so impatient and restless the entire time I’m sitting at the salon, that I think it’s better to spare everyone. I almost never have color on my nails either, because I’m pretty hard on my hands with the constant washing, plus grabbing at the edges of the tape I use when I’m doing lash extensions. Once polish starts chipping, I can’t help myself. I start picking at it, and then it’s a disaster. I still like my nails to look vaguely put-together, though, and a coat of this does wonders. It’s clear, so it’s not as noticeable if it chips, and it’s incredibly quick to put on and take off. It dries so fast I can be back to using my hands within minutes.
The wipes she stashes in her purse, car, and carry-on

Once while I was traveling, I spilled an entire coffee in my lap right as I sat down on the plane. I don’t know why, but I happened to have a packet of these in my bag. They totally saved me. Ever since then, I’ve made it a rule to always keep a packet with me in my bag, my car, and especially when I’m traveling, in case of spills or sticky hands.
The body oil she layers with perfume

I just recently started buying this again after a long break. I don’t know why I ever stopped. It smells incredible on its own, but it also layers so well underneath myperfumeinstead of fighting with it. Sometimes if I’m feeling extra-dry I’ll layer it with somebody lotion, but it’s usually enough on its own.
The whitening strips she habit stacks with

I drink a lot of coffee, so these are essential for me. I use them probably once or twice a month. I usually put them on during the weekend before I get in the shower, so that gives them a solid ten minutes, and then I just knock out chores while they’re working. (I try to habit stack whenever I can, and this is such an easy one to fold in.) I’ve noticed a small, subtle difference even after just one use. My teeth tend to get sensitive withwhitening strips, so honestly I’d rather have a tiny shift with zero pain than chase a 100-watt smile and end up with achy teeth for it.
The hand wash stocked at her studio

We go through bottles of this at Iris+West. Between clients, we’re washing our hands constantly throughout the day, and mosthand soapsleave your skin feeling stripped after that many washes. This one actually keeps our hands from drying out, which matters a lot when your hands are basically your tools.
Her go-to mascara for over a decade

CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Waterproof Mascara
I don’t wearmascaraoften because I try to always have a lash-lift and tint, but this has been a longtime favorite of mine regardless. I think I’ve been using it on and off for something like 15 years. It’s reliable, it comes off easily without any effort, and it gives me just enough definition without looking overly done for daytime.
Her wind-down beverage

I have a wind-down routine. It involves going for a walk with my boyfriend in the evenings, stretching while I’m watching TV, washing my face and doing my skin care, and usually making a cup of this. The directions say to use hot water, but I don’t. I just add a teaspoon of the magnesium to a small glass and fill it with filtered water. It dissolves just fine that way. My boyfriend hates the flavor, but I think it’s fine, honestly. I’m not loyal to a specific flavor. It just helps me chill out and get better sleep, which matters a lot.
