My Silk Dental Floss Is Honestly Kind of Chic

After ourPlastic-Free Kitchen Week, I made a bunch of changes to my food-prep tools (some swaps are still in the works, honestly). But all the consideration around what I was using to make my food got me to turn an eye toward other things. When I started poking around with de-plasticizing my dental-care routine, I learned immediately that plastic toothbrush bristles are extremely difficult to avoid. That pretty much left me with tweaking myfloss.
I foundBamBaw’s silk flossafter I realized that all of the cutesy flosses these days — the Cocoflosses of the world — are also plastic. BamBaw floss is wax-covered silk. Your starter pack comes with a compact stainless container: You screw off the top, pop the floss cylinder in, and thread the floss through the top of the container. Before I get into performance, I have to comment on this container. It’s substantial, making using it a more luxurious experience somehow. It’s also compact, about the size of a ChapStick (but slightly larger in diameter), which means it’s portable.

I was really satisfied with BamBaw the first time I used it. I was once a big tape-style floss user, but then I realized that glide came at the expense of sturdiness. Tape isn’t really hefty enough to scrape off plaque. The flexibility that makes it comfortable is actually a hindrance to its main job as a floss. So anyway, I like a starchy, tough little floss, and that’s what BamBaw is. It’s still comfortable, though. It’s covered in candelilla wax, which is plant derived and vegan. This wax isn’t slippery like whatever is put on regular floss. It’s grippy but soft. The silk thread doesn’t fray and doesn’t have as much give as plastic, so it’s sturdy in my hand and in my mouth. I can really get in there. As a serious flosser (no onWaterpiks, no on floss picks), that is what’s important to me. I’ve been using BamBaw silk floss for about six months now. I don’t know how much it’s saving me on microplastics exposure, but what I have figured out is it’s just a superior floss.
