Even before sculptor Vladimir Kanevsky’s faux plants went on view at the Frick this past spring, demand for his buoyant porcelain peonies and four-foot-tall hollyhocks had grown so large that the Ukrainian-born artist stopped accepting commissions. “My team didn’t even have the ability to open all the emails,” he says. Now, with the exhibition closed, and just in time for Valentine’s Day, you can order a small arrangement or a larger “potted” plant (from $3,000 at vladimirkanevsky.com) by inquiring online. Kanevsky, who trained as an architect, started to develop his hyperrealistic technique when he first moved here in the ’80s after answering a designer’s ad to create a decorative melon in porcelain. Despite his sculptures’ authentic look, the artist says “they’re not botanically correct. They just pretend to be, which is what art does.”
