Just Throw a Sachet in Your Suitcase

Earlier this month, I went to Paris for a girls’ trip with my mom and aunt. Girls’ trips — especially those that involve shopping in the Marais — call for my closet’s best, so I packed my favoriteAG barrel jeans, awhite peplum topthat I bought at Zara for the trip, and a plethora of basics. With those in place, I had some room left in mysuitcaseand tossed in some dirty laundry that I’d been procrastinating taking to the laundromat — and knew I could do in our Airbnb’s washer and dryer (yes, these are the lengths I will go to to avoid schlepping to the wash-and-fold). But even with the laundry confined to its own compartment in my suitcase, I needed something extra to keep my days-old clothes from sullying my carefully selected outfits. And so I took a chance on a suitcase-freshening solution: a scented sachet from Lafco.

Lafco’s sachets are little pouches filled with resin beads that release a scent — notes of lotus and lilies, lavender, gardenia, or raspberry and grapefruit — depending on the fragrance you choose. I had a sample of the brand’s new scent,Sea & Dune(a fresh floral mix including lotus flower, seagrass, and amber), ahead of my trip, so that’s what I stashed in my bag. After we reached our sunny Airbnb in the 3rd Arrondissement, I opened mysuitcase— which not only had plenty of time to marinate on the transatlantic flight, but a few hours extra thanks to a delay at JFK — and was honestly kind of blown away by the clean smell coming off my clothes. Even with the dirty laundry, there wasn’t a whiff of mustiness— only the breezy, haute-detergent-like smell of the sachet. (But don’t worry, I still threw the dirty stuff in the wash.) By the end of the weeklong trip, when suitcase-stuffed clothesusuallystart smelling a bit stale, I still only detected notes of lemon, lilies, and vetiver.
When I got home and opened my suitcase to show off my shopping spoils to my boyfriend (notably,my very first bucket bagandan adorable little strainer), the smell of the sachet brought me back to people watching duringapérohour. The sachet’s scent will run out in a few months, but I’ll be restocking as soon as it does. My little sachet has become as essential to my travel routine as myneck pillow, AirTag, and blackoutsleep mask. Now, if only I didn’t have to bring my post-trip laundry to the laundromat …
