What I’d Get From Old Navy x Anna Sui

First there was theGapaissance. Now there’s what could be the Old Navy-sance, thanks to a new collaboration betweenOld Navy and Anna Sui. Sui’s brand is synonymous with the’90s, and the collection — with its baby-doll waistlines, ruffled necklines, and, of course, florals — reminds me of adELiA*s catalogue. Prices range from $19.99 to $119.99, and sizes start at XS and go up to 4XL. I remember theAnna Sui for Targetcollection that was based on the originalGossip Girl, and I’m thinking this will sell out just as quickly. Today, the collaboration is officially live for everyone, and if you’re wondering what to get, here’s everything I tried on (I’m about five-two and a size medium, for reference).

If I were to buy anything from the collaboration, this might be it. It’s roomy but not boxy, and could be another layer when you have on something likeHeattech. I like it both buttoned and unbuttoned (more often than not, it’s either/or for me). For comparison’s sake, I cuffed the sleeves to where my wrists showed on one arm, and left the other as is, and I think I’ll keep them cuffed on account of my short arms. Helpfully, there’s a tag warning that the dye can rub off on you (so avoid wearing it with that brand-newwhite T-shirt). I didn’t notice any blue on the lilac sweater I was wearing, fortunately.

I can’t help but think aboutAlmost Famous’s Penny Lane here. How groovy are those shaggyfaux-fur cuffs? It’s just fun. Made from what’s marketed as “vegan suede,” or a blend of polyester and spandex (otherwise it wouldn’t be going for this price), it’s a lot lighter than actual suede would be. It’s not what you wear when you have to walk more than a block — it’s what you wear when the most you’re doing is stepping out of a cab.

This has all the comfort you want out of asweatshirt. Because of the fleece on the inside, you feel wrapped in a blanket. It’s like a welcome hug. And the dropped sleeves make it feel lived-in — as if you “borrowed” it from someone else.

The pluses: the elasticized trim on the cuffs and the vaguely paisley-ish lace. The minuses: the seam on the blouson sleeves and the peasant-style shape. They cancel each other out. I don’t think this did anything for me.

Arguably, it’s more Anna Sui than Old Navy x Anna Sui. In theory, it’s adorable. I almost couldn’t for the life of me get it on, though. If you’re bigger chested, beware! There was a noticeable gaping between the middle buttons, and I felt squished into it everywhere else. Maybe the next size would have helped.
