The ongoing Japanese matcha shortage has not been an issue in my home. Not because I don’t like matcha, but because I’ve been enjoying Korean matcha from Jeju instead. In addition to being more readily available, theseOsulloc instant-powder packetsare much easier to prepare than pure matcha powder. Each one contains all the matcha, milk powder, and sugar needed to create a tasty latte using nothing but water and a fork — although adedicated whiskcertainly helps if you have one on hand.

Unlike cheaper instant green-tea lattes I’ve tried, this one has a vibrant green color and retains the grassy, herbal notes that I associate with freshly prepared matcha. It is slightly sweeter than I personally prefer, but it tastes just right once diluted over ice. $2 per serving is a bit steep, but it’s still more affordable than paying $7 plus tip at a café for a drink prepared by a harried barista that often ends up tasting inexplicably of fish. Not that I’m bitter about that or anything.
