Penelope August, an interior designer who makes ceramics and custom furniture for her clients’ homes, is rarely at a loss forbeautiful objectsto fill a space. But when it comes to choosing the most practical of home items, a trash can, there is just one she relies on: theSaito Wood Co. Paper Wastebasket With Lid(from $160). “I use these in every project, and I have at least three in my own home,” she says. Saito Wood is currently run by Takuya Saito, whose grandfather Isamu Saito founded the woodworking and home-goods company in Japan in the 1940s. An elegant departure from the usual under-sink can, the basket is available in four finishes — walnut, teak, oak, and ash — comes in small and large sizes, and is sold in the U.S. at design shop Nalata Nalata. The ends of its swinging lid fold neatly into the basket. “It’s hard to find a wastebasket with a lid that looks high quality and not industrial or bathroom-y,” August says.
