Silk Is About to Get Harder to Find. Here’s What to Get Now.

On a recent episode ofOdd Lots, a Bloomberg podcast, Sarah LaFleur, founder of womenswear brandM.M. LaFleur, talked about the implications oftariffs. What caught our attention is what she said about silk. Silk, she says, has a complex supply chain with lots of variables, and the bulk of that supply chain is in China. That’s where M.M. LaFleur sources its silk, and the tariffs have disrupted its supply chain. “I don’t think my factory partners slept for seven days,” she says. It’s likely that lots of other brands will experience the same thing in the coming months (recently the tariffs were lowered from 130 percent to 30 percent along with a 10 percent baseline tariff), so we can expect price fluctuations if not production grinding to an outright halt. Silk pillowcaseshave become a beauty-routine staple. It’s gentler on skin than cotton and has more slip, reducing the friction and frizz. Personally, I sleep with the Slip Silk Mask. I own at least 15 of these and have amassed a collection of different colors and patterns. I like the feel and that it blocks out the glint of the street lights. Silk is notoriously high maintenance, but this “slightly sexy” silky sleep set fromNiletais washable.
