Pull-on pants — from satiny Reformation ones to Brooke Callahan’s side-tie pairs — have had something of a moment over the past year or so, but in my family, they’ve been the preferred style for much longer than that. My mom, who was a rhythmic gymnast and dancer, had dozens of ’90s track pants and joggers with stretchy waistbands — so to me, anything similar was not only cool but truly practical. Still, pull-on pants have their detractors. In a recent edition of theHate Readsnewsletter, pseudonymous author “Reynolds Woodcock” wrote that “They are juvenile, they are an eyesore, and above all, they are nasty.” Here at the Strategist, we simply won’t have that. We’ve been writing about pull-on pantssince 2017, and now there are more nice-looking styles than ever. They’ve transcended their reputation as lockdown mainstays and become an indispensable part of a spring wardrobe.
To be clear: Though I mentioned track pants and joggers earlier, pull-on pants arenotsweatpants. They are pants made of linen, cotton twill, lyocell, hemp, and more that you can easily dress up or down. Some are work-appropriate with trouser-inspired pleating, while others are more suitable for weekend wear or travel. Below, I’ve rounded up all the pull-on pants that have caught my eye lately, from our favorite pull-on work pants to the Le Bon Shoppe pair owned by more than one staffer.

All of these picks are still our favorites, and they’re all still in stock.

I own these pants in two colors — gray and a light beige — because they truly are that good. I love the double waistband, which almost gives the illusion of exposed boxers. They are incredibly breezy, and I wear them weekly for everything from fancy dinners to running errands, and even while I walk my dog. Like Aritzia’s ever-popularEffortless Pant, these are made from a Japanese crêpe called “crepette” (100 percent polyester) that has a smooth texture that hides wrinkles.

Another Aritzia favorite are the Lodge Pants, which I bought last summer while on a hunt for linen pants that weren’t see-through. They’re made with a combination of lyocell and linen, which makes the fabric less wrinkly than other all-linen pants I’ve tried, but they still feel super-airy. The Lodge pants have washed wonderfully even after dragging the white, wide-leg hems over sandy beaches and docks on multiple occasions.

If you’d prefer 100 percent linen, Madewell makes pull-on pants that look super-polished, thanks to their sewn fly front and slant pockets.

For an above-the-ankle moment, I like these cotton-twill pants from Los Angeles Apparel. “I love wearing light, wide-leg pants in the summer, and I feel like these just go with a lot of stuff, are comfy, and very durable,” says our sleep writer Amelia Jerden, who likes to wear hers while working from home or traveling.

I can’t decide which part I love most: the polka-dots, the slouchy mid-rise, or the satin.

I went on a mission to find butter-yellow pull-ons, and this Mango pair fit the bill.

This shade of the pants is called “Summer Linen,” but these are actually made of only lyocell, another naturally cool fiber.

Gauze is another ideal-for-warm-weather material, and I could really see packing these for a summer Euro trip in the near future. The material’s weave gives these some texture and makes them highly breathable.

The Dream Pant is ourfavorite pull-onpair of works pants, so I’ve included it in this list, too. Our writer Ambar Pardilla says they are as comfortable assweatpantsand don’t wrinkle or crease, even if you’ve been sitting for hours.

Last summer, our senior editor Hilary Reid was on the hunt for lightweight drawstring cotton pants. She had her eye on these from Brooke Callahan for a while and thought she wanted red, but after seeing the “chocolate” shade on a friend, she knew they would be ideal for wearing straight through late summer into early fall. “The fit is very flattering, the material is crisp but not too starchy, and the brown shade looks great with colorful tank tops,” Reid says.

Sézane is my go-to for high-qualityknitsand wardrobe staples, likeshirt dresses. (I’m also currently testing their popular Clyde Trench.) The Bruce Trousers have an adjustable drawstring waistband with pleating down the front and back, and this cheery green shade just screams spring picnic in the park.

Our senior editor Winnie Yang told me she wears these pull-on pants “probably three times a week.” Yang owns the Arc Pants in two colors :olive green and red. “I like the capacious pockets and the comfortable barrel shape that works well for my short legs,” Yang says. Another fan is our deals editor Sam Daly, whosaysshe’s “not exaggerating” about wearing these basically every day of the week. Daly loves the stretchy waistband and notes that since it’s a bit wider, it sits perfectly on her waist without pinching.

We’re fans of Jungmaven’s cotton-and-hempT-shirts, and the Ocean Pants are made with a similar lightweight and breathable blend. That means you’ll be able to wear these on the hottest days of summer.

My colleague Arielle Avila, who’s based in Texas, boughtthese linen pants because, she told me, she’s not ready to start wearing shorts all the time, despite the warm spring weather. “They’re breathable, versatile (I’ve worn them with tees and more dressed up with blouses), and soft right out of the box,” Avila says. She adds that the barrel-leg shape is enough to add some structure without feeling balloonlike.
