Sex pillows, also called sex-positioning pillows, can make sex more comfortable, more accessible, and more fun. And because they are specifically designed for sex, the best ones have qualities that your regularbed pillowmight lack: “I remember one of those magazines,CosmoorGlamour, used to suggest taking your bed pillow, folding it in half, and sticking it under your hips,” says sex educator and entertainerDirty Lola. Companies caught on, she says, and started manufacturing dedicated sex pillows with sturdier, washable materials and shapes and features that are more conducive to sex.
“I think about sex pillows as sexual enhancements,” says sex coach and author ofSexual Pleasure for DummiesMyisha Battle. “They are ways for us to really get around some of the trappings of being on a flatbedor a couch that’s a little uncomfortable, where we could stand to have some additional support that helps increase pleasure.”
Carol Queen, Ph.D., staff sexologist atGood Vibrationsin San Francisco and curator of the store’sAntique Vibrator Museum, adds that a sex pillow can allow bodies to fit together differently and more comfortably. They can also offer support for people who find sex difficult because of pain or mobility issues, or simply help “unlock new positions and open up our bodies in new ways,” says Lisa Finn, sex educator atBabeland.
When shopping for a sex pillow, look for products made from high-density foam, which will ensure proper support for your body compared to a regularmemory-foam bed pillow. You’ll also likely want one with a waterproof or water-resistant cover that you can throw in the washing machine, as the interior foam generally can’t be laundered. “You can take the cases off so you don’t have to worry about taking your whole sex wedge down to the laundromat,” says Dirty Lola.
Dirty Lola also recommends taking your space into consideration — do you have a place to store the pillow, especially if you’d rather keep it out of sight from guests or roommates? And if you’re buying one as a gift (maybe even forValentine’s Day), make sure it’s something your partner has hinted at. Not only can sex pillows be expensive, but you want to be sure it’s something your partner will be into.
The best wedge pillows and ramps for sex

Liberator Wedge
Liberator was the brand name I heard most often from experts, and for good reason — the company practically invented sex pillows as a product. The classic wedge shape can increase pleasure as well as help relieve pain or pressure from sex, Battle says. “If you find that your bodies don’t organically work well enough together, sometimes raising a hip or the pelvis is helpful, specifically for penetrative sex,” she says. Finn adds that propping your hips on a wedge can allow you to angle penetration more toward the G-spot or the prostate. Wedges can also make oral sex more comfortable, “specifically for cunnilingus, because not only does it allow the person who is on the pillow to open up their hips to allow more access, but it also lets the giver have a little bit more of a range of motion to move their head,” Finn says.

This slightly larger wedge may offer better support to larger people. “I’ve had clients who are in larger bodies that find that wedges are really helpful for them to get into sexual positions better with their partners,” Battle says.

Liberator Ramp
Liberator also makes a ramp that is big enough for one person to lay most of their body on, rather than just tucking a wedge under their hips.

If you’re interested in both pieces, you can bundle the smaller wedge and larger ramp for a discount. Queen notes that you can also choose a plus-size version for the wedge-ramp combo if you need additional support.

While all the experts I spoke to named Liberator as the top-shelf brand for sex pillows, Finn told me about a slightly less expensive brand called Pivot, which makes a similar wedge to Liberator’s, as well as aplus-size versionfor people with larger bodies.

If you have a strict budget, Pivot also makes inflatable positioners that Finn says are a great place to start. Plus, they’re easier to store.

Dirty Lola likes this pillow from Dame, which has a less dramatic incline than the classic wedges above as well as a slightly more subtle look that can easily blend into your bedroom: “It is a little bit more aesthetic, if you live in New York in a small apartment and you need to keep it out.”

Dirty Lola also likes this heart-shaped wedge because “it doesn’t scream sex wedge,” she says. “It comes in light colors and can just sit on your bed like a cute little addition. And then it’s easier for you to grab when you need it.” The heart shape is one of Finn’s favorites too: “The top of the heart is a really great shape for oral play or penetration because you can have the bottom’s legs over each hump of the top of the heart, and then the apex of the top of the heart is where their genitals can be, so that you have even more space while having the support underneath,” she says.

Queen recommends the dual-sided Jaz Motion pillow for its versatility: When placed on the flat side, it serves as an additional support pillow with a smaller footprint than a whole wedge or ramp. When placed on the curved side, it rocks along with your movements. There’s also a smallertravel size.
The best toy-mount pillows for sex

Another category of sex pillows are toy mounts. Finn recommends the Wing. “It holds a dildo or avibrator, and it’s reminiscent of the arm of a couch, which, historically, is something that a lot of people have said they explored with when they first started masturbating, especially folks with vulvas,” says Finn. “It provides you with something soft that you can grind and hump against,” she says. “And if you wanted to add a toy to have some solo penetration, you could do that as well.”

Finn also suggests the Wanda for those interested in toy-mount pillows. It can hold awand toy, which Finn notes can be cumbersome to use due to their larger size. “It’s shaped like a saddle, so you can either lay across it or sit on top of it and use that shape and that elevation to straddle without having to put all of the pressure and weight of your body on your knees,” Finn says. “That way you can really grind against the toy and not have to worry about using your hands. You can keep your hands free for other activities like nipple play or holding your phone so that you can sext your partner.”
