Designed to be afull-body massager, the Magic Wand (formerly known as the Hitachi Magic Wand) was originally released in 1968. With its long, heavy handle and fat rubber head, it’s easy to see how it could work out a knot on your shoulder. And Hitachi, a Japanese electronic manufacturing company, to this day has never publicly acknowledged its “off-label” use as avibrator. But the Magic Wand, thanks to good old-fashioned word of mouth and sex educators like pioneer Betty Dodson, took off. Hitachi would eventually take its name off the product entirely and pass the baton to its distributor, Vibratex, which imports the line throughout North America. It quickly became known as arguably the most famous and popularvibratorof all time. And, almost six decades later, it’s still my favorite. Experts I’ve spoken to have called it “the Cadillac of vibrators,” as well as “the Maybelline Great Lash of vibrators — the same no-frills shit your mom used (maybe still uses?) that gets the job done.” And while you really can’t go wrong with any version of the Magic Wand, I’m partial to the Rechargeable: It’s cordless, relatively quiet, long-lasting, and super powerful.

It’s the most powerful vibrator out there
During my tenure covering sex toys for the Strategist, I’ve tested out a lot of toys. Many of them boast all kinds of bells and whistles, with numerous settings and app compatibility. Or they are part of the new class of high-design vibrators that are often trying to look like anything other than what they are: sex toys. These new toys come in fun colors, are “discreet” and quiet, and tend to be smaller. And, ultimately, they sacrifice power for style. Which is why none of them come close to the Wand. The Magic Wand is straightforward: four intensity levels, four patterns, and an on-off switch. And it doesn’t need anything else, because it’s in a category of its own when it comes to intensity. Its super-strong motor, which maxes out at 6,300 RPM, is where the Magic Wand gets its, well, magic. It’s what creates the deep, rumbly vibrations the wand is best known for, while the large silicone head distributes those vibrations far and wide. Sure, you could pick a toy that’s easier on the eyes, but for many people, it’s what’s going on between your legs that really counts.

Just about everyone orgasms from it (even guys)
Choosing the right vibrator can be tricky, and recommending one even more so. Each person’s body is unique, and their preferences can be hard to guess. However, I’ve never gotten a bad review after recommending the Magic Wand. Friends and friends of friends and partners of friends have all reported back that they’ll never buy another toy after taking the Magic Wand into their bedroom for the night. It’s the Old Reliable in everyone’s nightstand because it gets the job done every time. It can coax an orgasm out of basically anybody, even those who have trouble finishing, thanks to its high intensity — while those who may be more sensitive can stick to the lower settings or use it indirectly. And while most people think of it for clitoral and vulva stimulation, it’s equally great for penises, too, because you can place it against either the frenulum or the base of the shaft for a powerful orgasm. Plus, you can even use it as was originally intended: a muscle massager.
The company isstillinnovating
While it doesn’t exactly look like an objet d’art, the Magic Wand is an iconic piece of design in its own right. It’s instantly recognizable, famous enough to be wielded bySex and the City’s Samantha Jones. It has remained virtually unchanged over the decades. And while the Magic Wand doesn’t need to be improved, in my opinion, there have been a few new releases that prove the brand can innovate — namely the Magic Wand Waterproof, which allows for up to 30 minutes of playtime in the bath or shower, and the Magic Wand Micro, which packs the power of the Magic Wand into a tiny, travel-ready bullet.
And once you buy one, you’ll have it for years
Unlike other toys on the market, the Magic Wand’s motor won’t just suddenly quit on you after a year or so of use. I’ve had mine for years, and it’s still going as strong as the day I first got it.
