Finally, A Mineral SPF Lip Gloss That Actually Feels Like Lip Gloss

I am always preaching the gospel oflip SPF. It’s not enough to slather your face with sun protection and then leave yourlips, which have very thin skin, unprotected. On a recent trip to Antigua, I forgot to pack my favorite Cay Skin lip gloss and my backup Naturium SPFlip balm, which led to a week of shielding my lips with my book in the hopes of dimming the sun’s effects. Ultimately, I was unsuccessful and spent the week after with a peeling, irritated mouth. All that said, my lip-SPF options tend to be limited to chemical filters. This is because mineral sunscreen is usually thicker and chunkier and zinc oxide is a haunting shade of iridescent purple. The options I had tried left my lips with a ghostly glow or were only available in a flat, strange color to mask the zinc. I’d all but given up on my search until I encountered sun gloss from Good Weather Skin.
I was introduced to the brand a year ago when it launched the One Daily Sunscreen, a no-cast mineral SPF. I remember liking it, but given my robust assortment of SPF, it never found a permanent place in my routine. The brand recently launched a lip product, which it sent over a few weeks ahead of launch. I swatched it on my mouth, expecting more of the same. I rubbed my lips together and was shocked to find there was no sunscreen taste. I applied a bit more and checked the ingredients, wondering if I had been mistaken. I was not. It was mineral, it was shiny, and it tasted like nothing, not even a suspicious chemical fruit.
It feels like any other lip gloss in my collection, though slightly cooler-toned than the colors I typically gravitate toward. The initial launch includes two shades — Ripe Berry, a rosy brown-berry color, and Iced Coffee, a cool-toned brown. While they aren’t my absolute favorite on their own, things are much improved with a brown lip liner, which I already apply anyway. After wearing it out for a couple days in place of my regular lip gloss, I was surprised to find how normal things felt; I often forgot it wasn’t my standard balm. The texture is nice and thick without being gloopy, and the shine level is pretty standard — closer to Tower 28 than an ultrashiny option like Ami Colé (RIP). The one thing I will note is that the color itself is pretty opaque, so I try to go in with a lighter touch so as to not completely change the color of my lips. To ensure I’m still getting a decent bit of protection, I make sure to reapply.
I’m not a mineral-SPF purist by any means, but I like having options. So while the face SPF hasn’t become a regular part of my sun-protection routine (yet), this definitely will be.
