We asked 20 notable people about their gifting philosophies, gifting nightmares, the best gifts under $25, and much more. We’ll be publishing each of their questionnaires now through December 23 in this new series, “How I Gift.” Today, fashion designer Simone Rocha on stainless-steel lunch boxes, illustrated Advent calendars, and the one present she’d give in perpetuity.
What is your gift-giving philosophy?
Always give a gift you would like to receive. I think if you can find the perfect gift for someone, it’s so satisfying. And I love to give gifts. But if you can’t think of something right away, I think if it’s something you appreciate, hopefully it’s something they would also appreciate.
What gift have you received that you’re most surprised about still using regularly?
My partner gave me an aluminum lunch box, but I’m not surprised. I knew I would use it. It’s 16 by 11.5 by 8 centimeters. I think it’s Taiwanese. I do bring a packed lunch with me to the studio depending on the day.

You have to give the same present to everyone for the rest of your life. What is it?
A book. Maybe a Seamus Heaney. I like to gift all books — novels, poetry, photography. I do like to write a dedication on the inside.

Advent calendars: great or dumb? Defend your position.
I like them. We were gifted a hand-felted one, and each year we would fill the pockets with chocolates — mainly chocolate gold coins. It was a gift from my stylist, Robbie Spencer, and his partner, Ben Toms. Ben’s mother handmade it. I loved it so much I asked her to make one for me to give to my godchildren.
My daughter and I fill ours every year as well as an illustrated paper one likethis.

Is it ever okay to regift?
I think so, if it’s not to your taste but you believe someone else will appreciate it more. But I try to avoid a gift being opened in front of me.
