One of the greatest things about being ourdenim correspondentis trying on a lot ofjeans. And one of the worst things is trying on a lot of jeans. I couldn’t hear the wordjeansafterJeans Monthat the Strategist last March without physically recoiling. And I didn’t buy any jeans for the rest of the year — or, at least, not a single pair that I didn’t end up returning. Until I tried on J.Crew’s Slim-Wide Jean.
I typically start atMadewellorAbercrombiewhen shopping for jeans, but when theWall Street Journalart editorAlexandra Citrin-Safaditold me her (now sold out) J. Crew High-Rise Bootcut Jeans were “sexxxy, and you have to keep the threex’s if you publish this, by the way, because I mean it,” I knew I wanted jeans that make me feel the same way. And so I headed toJ.Crew, where I found the Slim-Wide Jeans.
Not only do they fit in all the right places (hips, thighs, and butt), they make me feel pretty good about myself. It’s the right silhouette on me — the wide leg isn’t overwhelming as others are. I’m not thinkingI wish I was tallerwhen I wear them, either. (They’re available in 24-, 27-, and 30-inch inseams, or petite, standard, and tall. And for reference, I’m five-foot-two and I went with the petite 24-inch inseam.) Because of the 1 percent elastane in the jeans’ composition, they’re a little more forgiving than a rigid 100 percent cotton pair would be. I have a hard time finding jeans I wear for myself — especially writing about jeans all the time — but these are just that.
