It hasn’t reached the household-name status ofretinolorvitamin Cjust yet, but experts say it’s going to get even more popular. Unlike ingredients that targetwrinkles, ectoin helps skin defend itself against everyday stressors such as UV exposure, pollution, and dehydration by supporting a healthy skin barrier. “It seems to be very effective, so I expect to see it in a lot more formulas,” says cosmetic chemist Julie Pefferman. What is ectoin?
Ectoin is an amino acid classified as an extremolyte — a molecule that helps organisms survive in harsh environments, including extreme temperatures and high-salt lakes. It was first discovered in microorganisms living in desert environments and salt lakes. In skin care, it’s used for a similar purpose: helping defend skin against environmental stress while supporting hydration and a healthyskin barrier.
More than just another trendy ingredient, Pefferman says ectoin reflects a broader shift in skin care. “It’s part of the skin-minimalism movement,” she says. “People are going away from lots and lots of ingredients and focusing on a healthybarrier.”
How does it work?
Ectoin is a multitasker. It helps skin stay hydrated, strengthens the skin barrier, and protects cells from environmental stressors like UV radiation and pollution. It forms ahydrationshell around cells and proteins, helping them maintain their structure and function even under stressful conditions.
Research also suggests ectoin may also help reduce inflammation. “When formulated at the right percentage, it help with cytokines, proteins that regulate the skin’s immune response, at the topical level,” says Pefferman.
Who is it best for?
Most skin types can benefit from ectoin’s hydrating and barrier-supporting properties, but it’s especially well suited for sensitive skin because it helps calm inflammation while strengthening the skin barrier. “I think it’s going to be particularly good for people withrosacea and redness-prone skin,” says Pefferman.
