With this summer likely to be the hottest on record, many people are seeking an affordable and reliable way to keep cool and have fun. For younger swimmers, inflatable pools, splash pads, andstock tank poolscan do the job — but none of those options fit the whole family.

But not everyone has the space or budget for an in-ground pool, or the time for a lengthy construction project (at least not if you’re looking to beat the heatthissummer). However, there is a solution — an aboveground pool.

Aboveground pools surged in popularity during the pandemic, and they remain a great option this summer. They can be installed in a matter of hours, and with proper care can last a decade or more, offering many of the benefits of in-ground pools without the cost, commitment, or involved installation required — and if your family outgrows it, it can be dismantled and removed in just a few hours.

If you’re looking to keep your family refreshed and entertained during the dog days of summer, you’re in the right place. We have rounded up seven aboveground pools in different shapes, sizes, and styles (today’s aboveground pools are actually quite fetching), and at price points that will fit your budget.

Whattoconsiderbeforebuyinganabovegroundpool

Which aboveground pool type is best for you: soft-sided or hard-sided?

Aboveground pools come in two primary categories: soft-sided and hard-sided.

A soft-sided aboveground pool (the majority of the models you’ll find online and the type of pools our experts recommend, below) is built using a waterproof fabric structure hung on a metal frame. It is well suited for DIY installation and can be assembled in just a couple of hours, is meant to be taken apart and dried off at the end of each season, and is by far the less expensive option, starting at just a couple hundred dollars (hard-sided models start at well over a $1,000 as of publication).

The downside? Soft-sided pools “may start to show signs of wear and tear within a single season,” saysDan DiClerico, former HomeAdvisor expert and current director of home improvement and outdoor withGood Housekeeping. And they’re not really meant for year-round use — ideally, they should be drained, disassembled, and stored at the end of the season, or if you want to leave it up, drained, dried, and covered. So if you live in an area with true seasons, they almost always need to come down before cold weather hits. With proper care and periodicliner replacement, they can last several years, though depending on cost over time, it may make sense to eventually replace the whole pool rather than replacing the liner repeatedly, especially if other components like the filter wear out as well.

A hard-sided aboveground pool has a rigid structure made from steel, resin, or aluminum panels, within which is suspended a vinyl liner, and is meant for permanent or semipermanent installation. A hard-sided pool can easily last a decade or more, says DiClerico, though you periodically have to replace the liner. It uses a more robust filtration system, can be heated, is available in saltwater models, and can be left up all year. If you’re looking for something that approaches the scale, volume, and features of an in-ground pool, a hard-sided model is likely what you’re thinking about.

Hard-sided models can be much more difficult to install, and typically require the help of a professional, so you will want to plan on putting aside a bigger budget for site preparation and installation, or purchasing the pool through a pool company that will deliver and set up the pool for you. Barry Vineberg, owner ofLong Island Swim-Pool Service, suggestsThe Pool Factory, a company that, in his estimation, “probably sells half the aboveground pools in the country now. It will still be significantly cheaper than an in-ground pool, but it will cost more than the smaller and more compact pools our experts recommend below.

Scope out your space

While aboveground pools — especially the soft-sided models we discuss here — are not nearly as complicated to install as their in-ground counterparts, you’ll want to be aware of any installation challenges in your yard before buying.

Both soft- and hard-sided aboveground pools come in a variety of sizes and shapes. If you have the room, Bari suggests choosing a round-shaped swimming pool over an oval, because they make better use of your space: “It’s stronger, cheaper to build, and provides more swimming area.” Larger rectangular pools may have the room for swimming laps or other exercise, but they are often the priciest and may have more structural weak points than round pools.

You’ll want to make sure your town or city allows for the kind of pool you want to install. “Every town is different,” when it comes to zoning regulations, explains Andrew Bari, owner ofWestrock Pool and Spa. You’ll need to find out the necessary distance between your pool and the property line, as well as the distance between your pool and your house. To confirm your community’s regulations and to check to see if you’ll need a permit, a visit or call to the zoning board and building department is a good first step.

Know when to hire a professional

The aboveground pools we discuss below — all soft-sided models in relatively manageable dimensions — are meant for DIY installation and don’t require special electrical hookups or much site preparation beyond identifying an appropriate stretch of flat ground free of obstacles like rocks or tree stumps.

That said, DiClerico points out, “A lot of pools are sold as kits and are marketed asDIY-friendly, and they are, but I put the level of difficulty as moderate to high.” Vineberg says of DIY pool setup: “You have to be really handy to do it yourself … otherwise it’s going to end up with wrinkles, off level, and sometimes not safe.”

If you are an experienced DIYer, you can probably erect your pool, especially if it’s a smaller model, in an afternoon. For those less confident in their handyperson skills, Vineberg recommends hiring an installation professional. This is especially true with hard-sided aboveground pools, though larger models of soft-sided aboveground pool (like this32-foot-long pool from Intex) aretechnicallymeant for DIY installation but may require significant work, even just to prepare the site ahead of installation as well as to set up the pool.

Still, even a more affordable, smaller soft-sided aboveground pool can present an installation challenge, and proper installation is critical for proper pool function and user safety. Vineberg says it can cost $1,500 or more for the leveling and preparation of ground that might be needed. For semipermanent, hard-sided aboveground pools that use more robust filters and pumps, you’ll want to budget for an electrician as well. These can “require a dedicated 20-amp circuit with a GFI,” Vineberg says.

Safety first

Aside from the safety concerns associated with proper assembly and installation of the pool, user safety is the paramount concern for any pool. And that means, primarily, ensuring the safety of kids using the pool.

“My biggest safety recommendation is active adult supervision,” says pediatrician Jessica Hochman, M.D., host of the podcastYour Child Is Normal.“Designate a ‘water watcher’ whose sole responsibility is monitoring the children in and around the water. That person should avoid distractions such as phones, conversations, household tasks, or even stepping away briefly. If the water watcher needs to leave, there should be a direct handoff to another responsible adult. Never assume someone else is watching.”

DiClerico told us it’s also a good idea to call your insurance provider to check your homeowners coverage before getting an aboveground pool.

Pool shape: Round | Dimensions: 14 feet (diameter); 48 inches (height) | Water capacity: 4,024 gallons | Materials: 3-layer Tritech, steel frame | Features: 1,000 GPH filter, ladder, cover

Bestway’s 14-foot-diameter Steel Pro Max can accommodate 4,024 gallons of water thanks to its four-foot-high walls, allowing for true aquatic play or exercise (water aerobics, etc.) and use by kids and adults alike. This pool has a robust build and comes with a powerful filter, a cover, and a ladder.

“I think the Bestway Steel Pro Max provides one of the strongest combinations of durability and price, and seems to be easier to maintain,” says Colleen Bennett, founder and lead designer atCBB Design Firm. “I appreciate what seems to be the ease of installation for this pool,” says certified swim instructorKristy Squire, a 19-year veteran and specialist in safety-swim instruction and survival for young children. “I also like that it includes a cover, which could limit debris but also makes it less attractive for a child to find their way into it.”

Pool shape: Round | Dimensions: 12 feet (diameter); 30 inches (height) | Water capacity: 1,718 gallons | Materials: 3-ply PVC, steel frame | Features: Dual-suction 530 GPH filter

Affordable, relatively easy to set up and maintain, sized for small yards but big enough for several people to enjoy at once, and made by a well-established outdoor-products brand (“Intex produces high-quality products,” says Squire), this round aboveground pool from Intex is a savvy buy. It’s 12 feet across and can be filled to 24 inches of water depth: plenty of room for play if not lap swimming, and deep enough for adults to submerge while shallow enough for kids to wade in.

Competent DIY-ers can have this pool set up and ready to be filled in just an hour or so, while even the less handy can likely get it set up without calling a handyman. (You may need to add stairs or a ladder to make entry and exit easier.) An included 530-gallon-per-hour filter keeps the 1,780-plus gallons of water in the pool clean, though you’ll want to drain, clean, and refill the pool periodically as recommended.

Best for keeping an eye on young swimmers

Pool shape: Round | Dimensions: 18 feet (diameter); 48 inches (height) Water capacity: 6,092 gallons | Materials: PVC, steel frame | Features: Pump, ladder, cover, windows

This large round aboveground pool from Coleman has surprisingly good looks for an aboveground pool, and it’s made with robust enough materials to be set up again and again, year after year, or even left up year-round. The exterior features afaux-rattan finish that will match many properties well, while built-in porthole-style windows let people outside the pool see those swimming and let people within it enjoy a peek outside.

And those windows are about more than just elevated looks or fun for the swimmers inside the pool. “For young families, I’d recommend the Coleman Swim Vista because of its visibility and family-friendly features,” says Bennett. While they are no substitute for keeping a close eye on young swimmers, those windows let caregivers keep even better track of those using the pool. The included cover will keep the pool cleaner (and safer) over time.

Best for small families (or just for kids)

Pool shape: Round|Dimensions:8 feet (diameter); 30 inches (height)|Water capacity: 1,600 gallons|Materials: PVC, polyester, steel frame|Features: Hose-free filter pump

This smaller aboveground pool from Funsicle is perfect for kids too big for a classic inflatable pool, or even for an adult or two who want to float and lounge and generally keep cool. And its price matches its relatively minute dimensions. “It’s great that this pool comes with filtration,” says Squire, but she does note that it’s more of a kid-size option, adding, “Based on its size, it is not much bigger than a kiddie pool.”

Easy to set up and maintain, the latter thanks to that included hose-free filtration system, the Funsicle fits smaller properties and, when not in use, packs down for compact storage.

Pool shape: Round | Dimensions: 15 feet (diameter); 42 inches (height) | Water capacity: 3,736 | Material: 3-ply laminate PVC | Features: Pump, ladder, cover, ground cloth, patch

The Easy Set aboveground pool from Intex gets its name from its unique (and, yes, easy) setup method: There’s no frame here; you inflate the large ring that wraps around its upper circumference, then you just fill the pool with water. The water lifts the inflated ring up and fills out the pool, creating its large round shape. It’s like a giant kiddie pool.

“The size of this pool makes it nice for a temporary setup for summer,” says Squire. A great choice for people who want to avoid the setup of an external frame, this pool is also a good size for many families. It’s large enough for use by multiple people at once and deep enough for adults to submerge in or float atop on a pool lounger.

Pool shape: Oval | Dimensions: 16 feet (length); 10 feet (width); 42 inches (height) | Water capacity: 2,893 gallons | Material: 3-layer Tritech, steel frame | Features: Filter pump, ladder, repair patch

Big enough for short laps, aquatic aerobics, or lots of play is this 16-foor-long oval aboveground pool from Coleman. It comes with a ladder for easy access and the included filter processes up to 1,000 gallons of water per hour, so the pool will stay clean even with heavy use, provided you treat, drain, and clean it as needed.

The brand states that the pool can be assembled by two or three people in as little as an hour. The exterior features afauxstacked-stone design, while the interior has a multicolored blue-and-white pattern that looks lovely on sunny days.

Vineberg says that oval-shaped pools can be more difficult to set up correctly, and have an increased risk of collapse versus round pools, so he strongly recommends getting a professional to help with their setup.

Keep in mind that an aboveground pool is going to require regular cleaning and maintenance to keep the water clean. Along with a skimmer to remove any debris like leaves or bugs and a soft-bristled scrub brush to scour the liner, DiClerico suggests a water-testing kit to check the balance of the chlorine and chemical levels of the water as well as the chemicals and chlorine themselves.
