Strategist Explains
How much a pair of jeans costs depends on how it’s marketed, where it’s sold, profit margins, and the process by which it’s produced. More expensive jeans are usually all cotton, which makes them weightier. (Polyester, a filler commonly seen in less costly jeans, often produces thinner fabric.) Pricey jeans tend to have more stitches per inch of seam and to be made in the U.S. or Japan. But the location of the factory isn’t always an indicator of quality. Instead, note whether a company lists its ingredients, including the cotton’s source. That’s a sign the brand is trustworthy. Still, a $30 pair of jeans might last you years, depending on how often you wear and wash it. Before you make a purchase, consider what you want out of it. Maybe it doesn’t have to cost you $300. –Ambar Pardilla

“You know that old idea of saving
the good china for special occasions?
I don’t use mine daily, but I do like using nice glasses because it makes me feel pampered. I’m a pastel kind of gal, so I love these. They add a pop of color to the open shelves in my very neutral kitchen.”

“As I’ve gotten older, using a cloth laundry bag has become impossible for me. My assistant gave me this as a gift, and I thought, Oh, a hamper. That’s not great. But I love it. It’s one of my favorite things in the world. I can roll it from room to room full of dirty clothes, all the way to the laundry room. It holds a lot, too.”

“I got hooked on this during my first season hosting Top Chef. My makeup artist told me about it. My skin had been going through a lot because I had to wear makeup every day of filming. It’s great for killing bacteria on the surface of your skin, and it’s refreshing and cleansing.”

I like to write out my tasks the night
before; it helps me set the tone for the next morning and relieves some of my anxiety before bed. With this notebook, I can add a little fun to the process. You fit six tasks onto each page—when it’s time to tackle them, you can roll a six-sided die or the brand’s six-sided pencil (sold separately) to let fate decide the first task at hand. You can also roll to select a duration for the task, which is helpful for open-ended chores like checking email; left to my own devices, I’d spend only five minutes a day on that. –Jordan McMahon
