What Hairstylist and Arey Co-Founder Jay Small Buys at the Drugstore
Here at the Strategist, we love hearing about everyday stuff that actually works. That line of thinking extends to the drugstore beauty products in our medicine cabinets, shower caddies, and makeup bags. In our series “Beauty Aisle,” we talk to folks in the beauty industry — aestheticians, hairstylists, makeup artists, dermatologists, and the like — about the go-to affordable products they keep stocked. For this installment, Strategist beauty writer Krista Bennett DeMaio chatted with Jay Small, the co-founder of Arey and a trichologist and celebrity hairstylist, about the products he loves at the drugstore.
A hair spray that never gets sticky

It’s just a classic and my go-to, whether it’s for my own personal use or when I’m behind the chair with clients. You really can’t overuse it. It’s a very flexible hair spray. You’ll never get that stiff or crunchy feeling. I can use it during an eight-hour shoot and keep changing the hair. That’s the beauty of this product. It also has a fragrance that’s very nostalgic. It reminds me of my mom.
A men’s grooming go-to

I like this for all my male clients. It’s not too sticky or stiff, and you have time to manipulate it. I can work it through my hair with my hands, and then when it dries, it gets a little firm and holds the style in place.
A Mason Pearson dupe

It has a five-star rating. I buy this for anyone in my life, from my 10-year-old daughter to my hair assistants, because if I see them using it improperly, it doesn’t give me heart palpitations. I’ve given Mason Pearsons before, and they do not respect that it’s a $300 brush.
An aesthetic lip balm

Honestly, it’s the tin. I like the way it looks. I’ve always been drawn to the aesthetic of the product and then the smell. I’ve always loved Carmex in the little jar, too, but now I can’t find it that way. So it’s Rosebud Salve for me.
A hand cream that doubles as hair cream

I never thought of sea salt as a hand-cream ingredient, so this one caught my attention. It also has shea butter and argan oil. It absorbs pretty quickly. And if my hair is staticky and dry in the winter, I use some on my hair. A little hand cream goes a long way.
A floss that gets the job done

Desert Essence Tea Tree Oil Dental Floss
One thing to know about me is that I’m a dendrite, which means I take my oral hygiene incredibly seriously. That’s because I didn’t for a long time and I had to go through a whole series of dental treatments just to get to a normal baseline. So Dessert Essence Tea Tree Oil at Whole Foods is my go-to — because cavities don’t start on the surface of your teeth; they start in between your teeth. I literally get out of bed and floss my teeth and then do it multiple times a day. I like the fact that it’s waxed and not a ribbon, which may slide in between the teeth better, but it doesn’t take anything out. It also has tea-tree oil, so it stimulates your gums a little bit. It feels super clean.
A manly deodorant

When I look at it, I think man. But it has 48-hour protection, and it actually works. Not that I’ve ever put it to the 48-hour test. And it has charcoal, so it just feels like, Yes, this is doing something.
An elevated bar soap

Yardley English Lavender Luxury Soap
I love bar soaps. I get this one at Target. I love the smell of lavender. It just transforms my morning. I’m not big on bodywashes or loofahs. It feels like they’re encapsulating all the germs from yesterday.
A girl-dad staple

This is a constant repurchase. My daughter uses them. They’re soft and easy on the hair, and they stretch out a lot.
