“Strategist Brain” is a series where staffers share the stores they’ve stopped into, stuff they’ve spotted, and extra tidbits from stories they’ve worked on. You’ll hear from a different writer every week.

I’ve recently doubled down on slow living, and I’ve discovered that I love monotony, routine, and uniforms (somewhat of a city-girl taboo). I’m currently enamored with the concept of a Cartoon Network wardrobe — five set outfits that I can wear just about anywhere — and consider certain items in my closet “emotional-support clothes.” My friends have noticed my gradual induction into the capsule-wardrobe cult. “I don’t think I’ve seen you in a different jacket in months,” they remarked of my Lisa Says Gah pleather jacket. “Are you wearing your brown Miista boots tonight?” they texted me ahead of an outing. A surprising amount of people asked me what happened to my Unif Boba corduroy pants after a rip in their left butt pocket forced me to retire them. (I’m on the waitlist for a new pair because I’ve yet to find any other straight-leg pants that hang perfectly on the hips like the Unif Bobas do.)

So for my first-ever Strategist Brain, I thought I’d delve into a few of my old standbys that keep my appearance polished, my daily decision-making to a minimum, and my sanity intact throughout the week. Here are my emotional-support Hall of Famers, which you can catch me in all the time.

The Macey Jacket is some of the best faux leather I’ve ever felt. It has that liquid-y viscosity that hangs heavy on the shoulders, almost like lambskin, and the stitching and aged look of the fabric gives it unique dimension.

When it’s warmer out, I proudly wear this blazer out in the streets at night. I’m a big fan of shoulder pads and boxy jackets. It’s a modest and sophisticated cover-up for going-out outfits — essentially an upscale subway shirt.

I will regretfully expose my all-time favorite top: the Kevin from Sloppy Seconds. I stumbled into an eclectic Soho boutique one day that had a bunch of these on a rack, and I grabbed two. They’re expensive, but after four years and almost hundreds of washes, the flattering corsetry, nice buttons, and crisp collar are all very much intact.

Frame gifted me these shorts a few years ago, and they’re my dream jorts. I sized up so that they’d sit at my hips, and I pair them with practically every top I own. They’re not cheap, but they’ve survived hundreds of washes, and in the summer I wear them so much that the price per wear is now criminally low. So I’d argue they’re well worth it.

My friend put me on to Miista about three years ago (I was out of the loop). These boots definitely run big, but I just double up on socks and stomp around anytime an outfit calls for a heel — especially if said outfit involves a skirt.

Here’s everything else I’ve seen recently …

In an attempt to buy a 64-ounce water bottle for sipping on at home, I accidentally purchased a 128-ounce, newborn-baby-size water jug. At first I was mortified because it requires two hands to carry and makes my bedroom look even smaller than it already is. However, I’ve come to love it. I refill it every other day and now have an always chilled, seemingly endless supply of water at the ready without having to go to the faucet twice a day. A happy accident.

Williamsburg is a hellscape on sunny weekends because of the overwhelming foot traffic, but a few Saturdays ago, I realized it has its charms. Namely: a lovely woman with a box full of silk scarves for sale. A large black floral scarf caught my eye. I occasionally wear it as a wrap to accessorize my cartoon wardrobe, but it also looks very cute flowing in the wind tied around my belt loop. You’ll have to go to Williamsburg to find the lady and her scarves, but this silk botanical scarf on Etsy is similar to mine.

I’ve been collecting incense burners recently — they’re charming, functional, and a great substitute for candles. I bought this ceramic chimney off Etsy a while ago and recently added a new piece to my collection last weekend. While wandering Fulton Street in Fort Greene over Memorial Day weekend, I met a very nice man selling ceramics and glassware under the name Rtisun Emanations. I purchased one of his dashing (and easy to clean) incense holders, but he mentioned that he also makes sun catchers, which I’ll be purchasing as soon as I see him again. As far as I can tell, he doesn’t sell online.

Did everyone know that Ashley Stewart makes excellent cowboy hats? My friend and I dressed as rodeo clowns for the Cowboy Carter Tour and needed matching hats last minute. I wandered into Ashley Stewart on Fulton on a whim and found an impressive collection of high-quality hats — just $16 each. I chose one wrapped in a metal ring chain that draped around my chin, and I grabbed my friend one with rhinestones wrapped around the crown. Neither is available online, but this one I found on Etsy is similar to my friend’s hat.
