We All Agree That Article’s Lenia Bed Frame Is the Best for Your Money

Article’s Lenia bed frame is ourlong-standing best-in-classpick for its Shaker-inspired design, sturdy construction, and value. It comes in a few different styles, including one with a spindle headboard or one with a panel headboard, plus the choice of a canopy or built-in under-bed storage drawers. It’s also available in walnut, white-oak, or black-ash finishes, depending on which style you choose, making it somewhat customizable. The lead-time for delivery is about a week for most models, and assembly is a breeze. It’s also well built and looks more expensive than it is compared to similar bed frames from comparable retailers like West Elm. While it isn’t completely made out of solid wood, which typically costs a premium, it has solid wood components, hitting that sweet spot of quality furniture that’s not too expensive.

While I personally don’t own this bed, two Strategist staffers do. Senior writer Emma Wartzman, who bought the panel bed in walnut, has been sleeping on it for three years, while senior editor Hilary Reid, who bought the spindle headboard, also in walnut, got it in February. (It was first recommended to me back in 2021 by Liza Curtiss, former principal of design studio Le Whit.)
It looks good
After previously owning beds from Ikea and West Elm, Wartzman was looking for a “real” bed frame that would last, and not just aplatform. She chose the Lenia “honestly because I really loved the design,” she says, calling out the rounded posts and legs and the warm tone of the wood. Plus, its classic look was versatile. “It’s simple and not so statement-making that it couldn’t work if I ever rearrange or change up the décor in my room — or even theoretically come with me to a new apartment,” she says.
I visited Wartzman’s home in Brooklyn last spring to check out the bed in person and was surprised by how much I liked the walnut finish, which I usually find too dark. She had styled it with a gorgeous deep-blue quilt that contrasted nicely with the dark wood and gave her bedroom a sophisticated look. The tapered legs and headboard posts, as well as the slim rod that runs across the headboard, keep the frame’s silhouette light, as does the concealed joinery.
You can choose between two headboard styles
When Reid was hunting for a new bed frame earlier this year, she considered Wartzman’s model, but when she saw that it had a longer lead time for delivery, she started looking at the spindle option instead. “It was pleasingly Shaker-esque and light in a nice way, in the sense that it literally lets more light through than a solid board,” Reid says. She’s only had it for about three months, but “I really love it so far. It’s very elegant and adds a little texture to the room without feeling overpowering.” Reid, who has also had Ikea beds in the past, says the Lenia “just looks much nicer, and like a piece of furniture we’ll want to have for a while, versus something more transitory.” Just note that one potential drawback of the spindle version of the Lenia bed frame is that you can’t order it with under-bed storage; only the panel headboard is available with under-bed storage or a canopy.

It’s sturdy
According to Wartzman, who shares the bed with her fiancé, the Lenia has remained sturdy and creak-free as long as she’s owned it (though she has never moved it or disassembled it, which can be the cause of new creaks): “I have not had to make any adjustments or rescrew anything in.” When I visited, I also threw myself on the bed and gave it a good shake to confirm. Reid also finds the Lenia “very sturdy and solid.” The frame and headboard are built with solid beech and walnut veneer on plywood, while the legs and spindle details are solid wood.
The bed frame comes with wooden slats attached to a fabric ribbon that form the base of the platform, and they actually stay in place. Reid, who has had Ikea beds since college, said those slats would often shift and get unaligned. “And while the Article bed similarly has wood slats, they always stay put,” she says, thanks to 12 plugs that are inserted into the frame.
You can build it yourself in one hour
It’s easy to assemble — by yourself. Wartzman was too excited to wait until her fiancé got home to build the bed, and she did it solo in about an hour. It came flat-packed and had straightforward instructions that involved attaching the head- and footboards to the side rails, putting in a center beam, installing the slats, and then topping it with amattress. If you’d rather not bother, you can pay extra for assembly. That’s the route Reid took, paying $80 on top of the $119 delivery fee for a total of $199; when her bed arrived, putting it together took the two delivery people about ten minutes.
It’s a great value
In comparing the three beds she has owned over the years, Wartzman says the Ikea was “fine enough but not the sturdiest or cutest,” and it started to get nicked-up after a while. The West Elm bed, which was just a base without a headboard and cost about half the price of the Lenia, was decent but “not the most sophisticated choice.” She eventually wanted something a little more grown-up. “Now that I’ve had the Article bed for a few years and it has held up so well, I definitely think it was a great investment,” she says. Not only is it more befitting of an adult apartment — Wartzman describes it as “far and away more legit, both in terms of quality and looks,” than her earlier beds — “I would recommend it to a friend and buy it again in a heartbeat,” she says.
